I swapped my plush carbon full suss for a single speed 29er on last night's ride. It was love at first stream crossing! Could two such beasts be compatible in my life?

I had an sworks epic and then rode a rigid scandal 29er. I now only ride 29er.

Not ridden my FS since the Autumn. Havent missed it. Struggling to see how it fits in. Had one decent outing last year that probably wouldnt have enjoyed as much on the ht, (MachX & CyB).

Tinkering with the idea of running one frame & 3 sets of wheels - geared slicks, geared mtb & SS. Frame (sliding Inbred) has mech mount & sliding dropouts. If I set it up as 1x9, I figure I could leave the mech/cable/shifter & a longer chain ready to go on, with the geared wheels. If I use a matchmaker shifter pod mount it should only take a few mins to swap to geared...anyone done anything like this ? Need gears mainly for commuting, few tripes to Wales.

Does the advantage of low maintenance outweigh the disadvantage of no gears? Would I come unstuck on a single speed 29er h/t on really steep or technical terrain? Would riding one make me a better biker?

Maybe I'm confusing two issues here - bigger wheels and single speed. Not to mention titanium frame. So its three issues. Any advice on which combination of changes to consider?

29ers are a fad

They won't be around for long

The big manufacturers won't bother with them

You can't get parts for them

Built up a cheap rigid 29er late last summer to give it a go as im 6ft 2" and never really got on with any bike i had before - always felt too perched with the saddle up. After a couple of rides the 29er was a revelation - it just fitted me so much better and even in rigid form i feel more confident riding this than any 26" bike i had before.

Currently in the process of getting together some parts to build a nice Scandal 29er in the spring.

There is a lot of b*llsh*t around the 'niche' aspect of 29er's, but i ride one as they work for me been tall.

I built a Rigid Inbred 29er to use as a training bike through the winter. I am enjoying, although my knees are taking a while to adjust to the SS.

I have a 26 Whippet built up which will be my race bike post spring. I will run the Inbred as an 9spd for riding/training through the summer.

I'll see how i feel about the whole thing come summer... i might be buying a 29er carbon job...

I have managed to keep the love of both my niche-tastic rigid, drop bar, singlespeed 29er and my Blur 4X. I love the fact they are so different. I can't imagine ever not having a 29er now though.

My 2 main bikes are

Inbred 29er, with 100mm forks and alfine 8spd rear hub.... mostly a winter and nasty conditions bike.
Built this up last autumn and mostly ridden just this since....

and

Santa Cruz Superlight, with 120mm forks, wide bars, short stem and a bunch of tough but light parts and an uppy downy post. This is both my fun, go anywhere, ride anything bike as well as my long distance, comfy marathon bike. I love this bike and wouldn't be without it, or something similar.

I do also have a SC Bullit with 160mm lyriks on it for play bike duties. If I didn't live at the bottom of the hill in Innerleithen, then I doubt I'd own this bike.

Get a plush full suss 29er?

Or was it the HT/SS more than the 29er that could your eye?

I have been riding full sus single speed since 1999 then last year i aquired a td-1 with a rigid front end ,,

initialy i thought i would struggle without my nice preston under me, but to my surprise it;s been a revolation

infact i have gone on to design my own 29er and pay my own cash to have the first prototype built in titanium ,, you may even see it out there soon

so i am convinced of the 29er format and i am a relative short arse at 5'9" and shrinking
