[#5237325]

Trying to pull together my old mtb for commuting duties. First issue, the headset is of the threaded variety, as are the forks. The problem is that the steerer is a fraction to long for the headtube, and as such the threads don't extend far enough down the tube to tighten the headset properly. Its only about 3mm to short however...

Options - somehow try to extend the thread on the tube...no idea how to do this?

Some kind of spacer below the fork crown race. Would only need to be a few mm thick. Would this be safe and if so could I just use a headset spacer thingy?

Can you not take it to a bike shop and ask if they could cut the threads longer ?

Used to be a common thing to cut thread on forks , but many newer shops may not have the tools

Personally I would look at a new headset or forks dependent upon which is cheaper.

There are still places that will cut a fork thread. Dependent as to where you are it may be worth inquiring with a frame builder.

Many lbs shops should have the fork cutting tools for threading.

However larger shops like evans may not have the facility surprisingly.

Personally I would get the thread cut longer over a new fork or headset. Afterall if it works then why fix it.

Hang on a moment you just need some washers between the nut and the head set.

the benefits of being old. spend longer playing with threaded headsets than the other sort. it wasn't many years but they seemed to need adjusting all the time.

Well, er, no. The upper race actually needs to sit on the threaded portion to tighten/adust it. There is no'putting a washer' below this.

the 'nut' is just a locknut. the thread is a cut thread, so the upper race cannot go lower than the end of the threaded section of the steerer anyway.
