Does anyone know anything about this site sent to me by a fellow STW member?
And if you do, do you know if it is somehow possible to use it to 'augment' my MemoryMap collection?
An idiots guide of how to do it would be really good if you can. Ta, Ambrose
Hmmm, looks interesting. Haven't had a chance to test it yet but it looks like this application scrapes various mapping websites to create raster maps you can load onto your mobile phone.
As it exports to a format the OziExplorer can use (png) it is likely that it could be adapted to use with Memory Map as long as you have a version of MM which allows maps to be calibrated. Note: AFAIK, versions of MM which use OS maps do NOT allow map calibration.

So, I guess, the first thing to find out is can your version of MM calibrate maps? If so, then maybe. If not, unlikely.
If you want to investigate further, there's more details on the rather ace Free Geography Tools website
Ambrose... looking at what the site says it can do, and knowing that the MemoryMap format is not an open one, I'd have to say no, it won't allow you to make your own MemoryMap files...
It's main use appears to be for mobile applications where you'd normally be downloading the tiles from the internet and instead you can download the area you are interested in and set the software on your phone to use that instead.
and knowing that the MemoryMap format is not an open one, I'd have to say no, it won't allow you to make your own MemoryMap files...
But certain versions of MM allow you to convert PNG (raster)files into MM format. For instance, by using Photoshop, I can extract maps from PDF documents, convert them to PNG and calibrate these in MM (The "calibration" geo-references and converts them to MM's QCT format)
From their MOBAC website:
. Automatically extracting the PNG is the useful part...Additionally individual maps can be exported as one large PNG image with calibration MAP file for OziExplorer.
Well I never knew that... I'll have to investigate that then...
And having looked at the software a little more, it can use MultiMap as one of it's map sources, which has OS maps, and so would be able to download those.
So, in the end, it might well be possible to use it to make MemoryMap files, although I am now more interested in what Android software it can make maps for...
Oohh goody. MM can calibrate maps- or at least my version can. All I want to know is how to use mobac to get me a map for me to calibrate. You guys seem pretty clued up, over to you ๐
Happy Happy Happy now!
MM does not like the PNG files that Mobac creates- so I converted them to TIFF, calibrated them and lo and behold- seemingly unlimited digital mapping for the masses! Yippee!
Anyone want the Amman Valley at 1:250000? ๐
I installed this last night and decided to download all 19 zoom levels of Google Maps at the largest screen resolution. That was at 6pm last night and it's got another estimated 5 hrs to run!! ๐ณ
Ho hum, let's wait and see what happens and try to be a little less ambitious next time ๐
Mark- I too did that- and then pressed the wrong key by mistake- bogger!
It takes a bit of getting used to, and I'm not sure how to utilise the georeferancing files yet, or even if I can within MM.
Next step is to see if I can use it on a SonyEricsson W995. Any ideas anyone?
Glad you're getting along with the software Ambrose ๐ . I've been using it to put 25k OS maps on my Dakota, works a treat!
Mark- I now 'own' Wales, Quantocks, about to get Penwith, Surrey Hills, Wester Ross (Summer trip), looking for Inca trail, Iceland, Perth. Happy days!
OK, still working through this. The files I've downloaded are far too large to use on a mobile device so I'm re-downloading smaller tiles and will re-try when they are done.
My objective is to get geo-reference PNG raster maps of my area (Vancouver) so I'm downloading various Google Maps layers. These will be calibrated for OziExplorer by default but I want to use them in Memory Map. Luckily, I've found another program MAPC2MAPC which will convert OziExplorer MAP calibration files to Memory Map JPR calibration files (as well as doing a whole host of other useful stuff).
I should then be able to load them into MM and can then use MM to transfer them to my mobile.

If that phone uses Windows Mobile OS, then you can use MM to install their 'Pocket Navigator' product onto the phone then transfer your calibrated maps onto the phone. And if the phone has GPS (or you can hook up an external bluetooth GPS) you can even track where you are in real time on decent (free!) maps...
If the phone isn't Windows Mobile OS, then I can't help you but there probably is a product out there which can do something similar to MM.
Cheers Mark. I'll give all that a good go.
i used it to download maps for use on my blackberry, obviously the areas are small because of screen size, but it worked well enough to work out where i was.
pedalhead - MemberGlad you're getting along with the software Ambrose . I've been using it to put 25k OS maps on my Dakota, works a treat!
Hey pedalhead - a quick question for you. How do you find the performance of the Dakota with raster maps on it? Does it re-draw the map quickly enough for cycling? By that I mean, do you find yourself riding off the screen then having to wait for the maps to refresh with the 'new' area?
I'm considering replacing my eTrex Legend Hcx. I tried loading maps converted from Raster to Vector by MOAGU onto the Legend but it was far too slow re-drawing.
I use it on my Dakota but don't really use it as a map for directions just if I need a bit of help. Works really well though. Just got a load of maps for the Alps. Best bit is that for the Garmin maps they are KMZ files so they open up in Google maps so you have cool overlay maps and can see where the trails are using the satellite image and the map... Goes off and drools over the Porte du soliel map and routes..
The maps draw fine for continual navigation, but it can be a bit painful if you're manually zooming in/out & scrolling the map around. Not a deal breaker though.
