Sorry i know this has been done before but my question is slightly different, i think 😕

I currently have a dilema which i need your input on please.

Sitting in my shed is a Mythic Paradox a Ventana El Capitan & a ScandAL 29er. The idea was to have the Ventana built up during the summer for general hooning around the Surrey hills & trips away to Wales etc. The Paradox would be rebuilt in the winter to preserve the Ventana using the parts on the Ventana & used for general riding as they both run 120mm fork. The ScandAL was for XC stuff & 6-12 hour racing a few times a year.

However, as things stand at the moment I'm just not getting the use out of the Ventana to justify keeping hold of it plus its too much bike for where & what i normally ride. On top of this i could do with the cash to clear my credit card 🙄

The ScandAL is built for XC so is quite light & I'm not a small chap so i don't feel confident jumping it that much which i would do if this was my only bike (its shod with Hope ProII's on Stans Creasts)

I can't help thinking that i only really need 1 bike but it needs to be an all rounder. Common sense says to sell the Ventana, repay the debt, rebuild the paradox and keep the ScandAL as this is the cheapest route but if i could get away with 1 bike that would be a better option.

So what options are out there for a frame only 29er hardtail which is light enough to race, comfy enough to ride all day, & sturdy enough to take on small drops 2' max plus come in under £500?

Over to you 😉

You don't mention forks, so unless you've got something particularly fragile on the scandal...

Option 1) Buy a second 'burly' wheel set for the scandal with flow rims and big tyres?
Option 2) Get some skills training to help you get the 2' drops silky smooth and no more investment should be required.

Maybe do both...?

any frame will be able to handle a 2' drop.

The forks on the Scandal are 100mm Minutes which i really like.

A mate is a skills instructor & a course with him is VERY high up on the list 8)

No advice to give, but if you were to sell the Scandal and its wheels I might be interested, if it's a medium...

bigsi, iirc without being rude, your name is quite fitting?

If so, what you doing owning a bike with 29er Crests fitted? 26" Crests are quite flexy, the ones I've had a go on anyway, 29er Crests will be wa too flexy and I'm under 12 stone...

If you're going down the one bike route, I think you should probably keep the Paradox. It's probably the best intermediate option, and is a nice frame to boot, that is as you put it "light enough to race, comfy enough to ride all day, & sturdy enough to take on small drops 2' max plus come in under £500?" especially as you already own it... And if it's not comfy enough, fit a bigger back tyre.

No you're right mboy & the question of me riding crests has been raised before must recently by a mate who builds wheels for a living.

I've formulated a plan which involves 2 bikes & will cover all bases.

Thanks all 🙂
