What's the purpose of that little chain thing?
I had one on my chopper when I was 7 and 33 years later I still don't know what it's for.
Because solid rods don't go round corners.
To connect the cable to the solid rod that changes the gears and what PP said.
Whilst we're on the topic of sturmey archer hubs, does anyone do any service/maintenance of theirs?
Had my 3 speed one for years on my Dahon folding bike and I've done nothing aside sorting out the indexing once in a while.
I've killed a couple. 🙁 The pawls seem to shatter at about 3,000 miles.
Had one go under full load when I was about 13. Went over the bars followed by the rest of the bike and the end of the bolt on the back wheel went through my glasses leaving a perfect hole. Not an experience I want to repeat. Hated those bloody gears with a vengeance. 😀
I love the gentle click the hub makes, thinking of getting one for the town bike as it slowly changes from SS to geared for the kiddy trailer

I serviced a Strumey recently, really interesting to see all the internals and how everything worked.

Some weeks over the winter you were pretty much the only person on my Strava feed day in, day out so that doesn't totally surprise me 😉

Easy to do? Any guides I should be using?
Suprisingly easy, i thought it would be a mess of small parts. use sheldonbrown.com to find the appropriate guide.
Spares back up is very good for there hubs. And as above quite simple to get into
About the only way to break them is to twiddle the adjustment instead of setting it to the mark.
I've got a couple of bikes that are over 70 years old and the hubs are still perfect.
