[#4178165]

Anyone using an On-one slackset headset? I got one a couple of months back for my Heckler and although pleased with the slacker angles, I was gutted to remove the faultless Hope headset that was on. 2 months later and creaking at the headset made me have a look at the condition of the internals. I was pretty shocked to see bearings in a race, rather than a sealed cartridge (like any other headset over £10). They needed cleaning and regreasing, but I'd like to replace if I can.
Anyone know if these on-one slacksets are the same as Works Components? It does say "by works components" on their website. I read Northwind's reply on HERE saying Works Components use Cane Creek S3 cartridges - can I fit them? TIA

Ooh, good question- everything I've seen from On One suggests they're the same as the Works one but both my proper Works ones came with CC bearings in (incidentally the Hope ones are the exact same size/shape so if you've still got the Hope, try it out...)

Let us know how it works out would you? I noticed they've dropped the price to £40, was thinking of getting one for another bike but I won't bother if the bearing size is different.

Will do tomorrow. Yeah, thought I paid £70, pretty shoddy bearings for that price.

I wasn't aware Works Components had changed the bearing specs from the models they are selling. They didn't point that out. I wonder if yours had "come apart".

All the ones I've seen were Cane Creek S3 type bearings.

Last year, I bought the Works 1-1/8" version. Earlier this year, I had some noise from the front of the bike, so removed the bars and stem from the fork, and dropped the fork from the frame. The bearings were good quality cartridge bearings, still perfectly smooth w/no rust. I just cleaned everything up, regreased lightly and reassembled everything.

Brant makes a good point there- it's an angular bearing in the cane creeks so it can come apart and leave you with what looks like separate bearings and races. Had that happen when I last changed one

It could well be that, I did have trouble removing the inners, they seemed to be wedged in, so used a thin screw driver to pry them out. Its likely they fell apart then. My garage needs better lights!

I've been happy with my Works Components headset in my Turner so far but the sealing from the elements looks very poor in comparison to the Hope I took out so the bearing cartridge looks pretty vulnerable in comparison. That and any tiny discrepancy in fitting the cups which presumably will put loads of adverse loading on the bearings and I'm not expecting a huge life out of them before they need replacing.

What I find is the top ones go faster than any other bearing I've used (and I've got a canecreek S3 in another bike so exact same parts). Might be daft but I think the big flat top of the headset encourages water to settle on top of the bearing!

Interested to to try one of these on my enduro, should knock out the HA to about 66.

I can see why the bearings would wear faster than a normal headset but do the benefits outweigh this?
