[Closed] On-One MAX Adaptable Maxle Wheelset - any good?
As per the title, is the On-One MAX Adaptable Maxle Wheelset any good? Google search doesn;t throw up much in the way of reviews, and the forum threads it finds are really old, either saying "it's cheap why not try it" or slating them for crap bearings.
So, any real world experiences of them in the last few months? Worth a punt, or should I continue saving for Hope Pro IIs so that all the bikes run the same hubs?
I bought some of these (EQ29 on MAX hubs) for an Alps trip recently. Wheels were about 2-3mm out of true, with a noticeable slight wobble out of the box. They also pinked and plonked a lot when I did the first ride on them, and they needed some attention with a spoke key half way through the holiday. I also managed to ding the rear rim after a pinch flat, but that's not really a fault as such (though disappointing for a burly rim).
However, the hubs themselves seem good, nice pickup on the rear and the adaptability is a nice bonus. I still think for £130 they were an ok buy, I probably got a friday tea time pair 🙂
In my personal experience, no. I had a pair in 29er flavour, had an over the bars incident (hard braking to avoid collision rather than hitting anything) and both rims were pringled beyond repair.
It seems to me that the braking forces alone were enough to completley write them off, On one said that it was crash damage and not a warranty issue so that was that.
The hubs however are quite reasonable and i re-used them to build up some wheels on DT Swiss rims.
I'm a big fan off On one and Planet X bikes, but wheels is one thing they don't do well imo, i'd rather have something handbuilt and a bit heavier from Merlin, at least you know it's going to last.
I had a set which went very pringly after a couple of rides. I took them to the LBS and they refused to touch them because of the high/uneven tension.
But On One replaced them no bother and they replacement set have been fine for a year. I replaced the bearings as the front was a bit grumbly a month or two ago, cheap and easy to do with generic bearings.
I'm trying to break them so I can justify some Arch EXs on something posher, but can't. They're a decent weight, and this pair are well built.
