I bought one of the original 853 frames when they were first issued. was that in early 00s? i been away from cycling for a good few years and its maybe time to clear out and make some space.
This is on of the first batches and still has the signature on the frame (Brant's?)
What is the demand and value of these nowadays, they were highly rated back then but i wonder if there is much resale value.
Any thoughts.
Is it the blue one?
I had one one these so assuming it's the right size id be interested.
The original 853 Inbreds were all singlespeeds, I had one. About 2000/1 I think.
Yeah, 853 was singlespeed, the first geared one was “DN6” (plain old cromoly, but perfectly good—had some great times on mine, though I don’t recall mine being autographed 😉 Maybe you’ve somehow got a prototype…?).
We did a run of geared 853 ones in maybe 2007/2008?
I think there were 100 made.
The signed ones were a small batch of geared 853 anniversary ones. I've got a frame down in the shed; can't help with price though.
Does have limited value, harder and harder to get decent straight steerer forks to go with it.
I had a Blue one and was always concerned about the chain stay cracking, like PPoddys one did. Although he has kept it alive in various guises.
yes, its a blue one and sure its 16" size frame.
As late as 2007/08! i'd have thought it was earlier.
maybe it wasnt the first 853 frame - i seem to recall there was lots of options, geared, SS, colour options too.
Yeah I've got one of the blue 853 geared frames in the garage. the rear end is out of alignment on mine, it was "retired" at abou the time the Blue Pig was launched
Still have both my geared and single 853 2006 frames - love them
Sadly my 853 Inbred surcummed to the curse of chainsuck and resulted in separation of chainstay and BB. Was my go-to N+1 until it died, was originally black and then powder coated red. Ran it with suspension, rigid and single speed with a Trick Stuff Eccenticizer. Bought a DN6 version of it, however didn't feel right and I had to sell on. If it was still around I doubt I would have bought a 29er, current steed rigid El Mariachi.
An 853 Inbred SS, today.

Although that photo was taken ages ago, it still looks like that.
Anniversary ones were 2007, signed by Brant on the downtube unless they were black as his white pen didn't work or something (mine was black). Cracked chainstay after 5 years, replaced with design with more chainring clearance and powder coated and I am still riding it as a rigid 26/27.5 er
Still have my 2007 853 single speed, the white paint didn't do well after 5 years baked in the sun in the Middle East, so now its sprayed matt black and serving its retirement as a pub bike
Boy1’s 853 SS

I've got a pink 853 inbred in the shed. It will get built again- it's an ace ride.
I’ve still got mine. It’s still basically my main MTB although I rarely do that now. It’s also been a tourer, single speed and commuter. It’s been welded twice, one new chainstay that fixed the chain suck issues they suffered with and again when the seat tube cracked. It was blue, then orange, now blue again. Currently has 1x11 XT and revelations on it. It’s not for sale. 😀
Blue signed 853 geared here. Has carried two kids round forest trails equipped with a weeride. Great memories. Funnest ride is still my plain old 350 quid inbred singlespeed from 2005 though.
I have got mine built up as a gravel bike I would post a picture if someone would kindly explain how?
I’ve still got mine
And through what adventures that frame has been 😎 (p.s. good to see Mr PP on the forum)
I had a pink one but ended up selling it as I needed cash...
This is my only MTB now - Ti Inbred - had it from new and it will stay with me...
Geared and single speed pink 853s here - my only bikes since I bought them and continue to be great.
Good to see a lot of variations of the bike. Anyone know the paint code for the blue frames. I would consider a full respray but the decals do add a touch to these bikes, so maybe just try and touch it up.
I have an eps file of the original Inbred sticker set if anyone needs it...
...it would need a bit of work to get the white outlines, but an easy job for any decent decals place.
@peterpoddy need some advice on chainstay replacement as I think mine has succumbed. I think you went to Argos in Bristol? Any tips?
Mine was done by Argos Cycles in Bristol. I had them put a straighter stay in than the original. Lost a tiny amount of clearance but cured the chain suck completely. Still got it. Still fine. 🙂
Thanks for the update Peter. I will pop down there and tell them I want the 'Peter Poddy service' and hope they know what I mean (noting it could all go horribly wrong if you are in fact a terrible deviant who is into weird stuff).
Haha! I doubt they’ll remember, it must be 10-12 years ago I had that done!
