[Closed] On One Chunky Monkey on the rear??

I've just put a chunky monkey on the front wheel of the slow-build Grapil. It looks a good size, postively dwarfing the 2.25 Nobby Nic on the rear....

So, I could put a Smorgasbord on the rear, but I like the concept of the volume of the chunky monkey... and they're cheap at the moment.

Anyone run a CM on the rear? The tread pattern doesn't look a mile off working...

I tried it on the rear and it made the bike pretty sluggish.

Not overly arsed about sluggishness, this is mainly a bike for having fun going down, I have bikes for going fast up 🙂

It's such a big tyre that it only just went on my five at the rear. Removed in the end as it was buzzing the stays when pushed.now have a 2.3 high roller in there and it looks much smaller than .2 difference.

I ran this combo on my El-Guapo in the summer a couple of years ago an insane amount of grip. Rolls slow. FYI CM don't do so well in proper mud or thick loose dirt.

Interesting last comment, sounds like cm might be the way to go for me

nice on the rear on the HT. great to have the volume. gash on the front, threatened to put me on my arse a couple of times, then followed through on the threat. vanilla, cheapy rubber version BTW. maybe i shouldn't have expected too much.

Ran CM rear in the Alps but found too draggy for my local UK riding so run a Smorgasbord instead...same tread but just a bit narrower. Still good volume though and decent thickness sidewalls.

Hans Dampf / Minion on the front though

Chunky monkey/smorgasbord combo is doing the job for me.

Surprised by this what conditions and sort of trails were you running running the CM on? In the conditions it is for it beats every tyre I have tried DHF 2.5, DHR II, HD, TK 2.4, Butcher and HR II.

I'm CM/SB front/rear.

I recall that some on here were running CM backwards on the rear

frosty - i was surprised too given the rave reviews on here. win some you loose some. 🙂
where i ride is forested peat over a flint cap. so a bit of peat mud ( but not much ), loam and roots, loose flint, also some sandstone soil.

Briefly used the CM on the front before my 29x3 chronicle arrived but loved it on the rear for all winter spins. I can't think of any situations where they gave me issues on the front but that's just me.

On the rear I ran them in the low 20s psi with no issues although they were a bit draggy at that pressure. I had them on a Solaris on a P35 rim but the only reason I 'downgraded' to a Smog was their width and resultant chain stay rubbing.

Their grip in forestry 'thick' mud / wet stone is the best I've had compared to all the Schwables. Their durability was also great...the only 'downside' would be the weight penalty...but I still need to loose a couple of stone so I'll not quibble about that one too much and @ £15 a pop I can't grumble too much.

Just waiting for on one to bring out their own branded 29x3 tyre now.....

If they're cheap then give it a go, I don't think you'll stick with it - but if that is the case then you can keep it as a spare for the front.

I've been running them tubeless front and rear for two years now on my El Guapo, both are the dual compound version and they've never let me down for grip. Perhaps a little slower but not to the extent I'm bothered by it or can't keep up.

Also not had a single puncture in that time, I'm very fond of them.

The CM has a shallow tread compared to most agro tyres but has a lot of surface area so if your riding terain where the loose top surface is no deeper than the tread they work very well. If the mud or sand is deeper than the tread they tend to float and your would be better off with something with more spike like a 2.5 DHF.

I run CMs front and rear. They work fine for me. My Grapil snapped on the chainstay weld right next to the tyre, but extreme levels of paranoia would be required to believe that the CM was responsible for this. It wasn't.

Aha, so the 2.4 cm fits in a grapil ? Good to know... How much clearance was there?

Another vote for Cm front and SB rear. Tried CM on both and I could cope with the reduced roll on the up because of the grip on the way down but noticeably draggy and where my mate was free wheeling on his Hands Damphe I was needing to pedal.

Love the grip and the cheapness on the CM front though.

CM front and rear for me. Not the best in the mud however it is so muddy at the moment not sure how much better anything else would be.

Just held up the front wheel (with CM) in the rear triangle of the grapil.... LOADS of room! ordered 🙂
