Has anyone got any good ideas at all? Ideally something a bit more than an under-saddle strap.

I made this and it holds everything I need but the pump (small pump was rubbish) which fits in a small water only backpack. Nothing I found off the shelf was a good fit.
What do you need to store?

It's to keep a tool, bit of spare chain, innertube, keys, flapjack, pump if I can, maybe a mini Montane jacket etc. - just the usual bits and bobs. I like those frame bags, but it'd be for a 16" frame so not much room to play with. That's a great effort on making one though HB - are you an experienced, er, seamstress?

Not at all, err this wasn't the first effort 🙁 and Mrs HB gave me some lessons on the sewing machine. Custom made bags were an expensive way of experimenting and there are loads of how tos on bikepacking websites.
An XL frame does give you plenty of room.

In the context of it being custom made to fit your bike and the price of similar sized non-custom bags from Alpkit (about £30), it seems a fair price to me.
i've been using bib shorts with "stealth" pockets to carry things whilst out on my Stage 5.
Got the Sombrio ones and can carry a water bottle, tube/pump, multi-tool and light jacket at a push.
I hate riding with a pack and seems much more secure than fastening to the bike!

I wish I could put stuff in my pockets (jersey or shorts), but it makes me completely incapable of bunnyhopping anything and generally spoils my ability to get airborne. The same is true if I wear a pack. I don't know if it's a technique issue or what...
