Is it worth trying older (say 2009) versions of 'The One' or are there issues and better avoided?

Never had a problem with mine. Still prefer them over the new XT ones i have on the other bike.

Mine have been brilliant! No issues apart from popping a piston seal due to my own stupidity... Couple of sets of Megas been totally hassle free and just as good!

mine have been great too
i also have the later "the ones" also and i prefer the older ones
great stopping power, i love em
