[#1989113]

Hello, my work mate has a brand new set of XTR cranks which he's had sitting around at home for years not really knowing what they were (he used to work for Shimano importers). They are pre hollowtech, model no FC-M952-4/5. They are grey anodised & look really nice. Still boxed and brand new but as they are a few years old I've got no idea what they're worth. They are unfortuantely no good to me as they won't fit my hollowtech bottom bracket but does anyone have any idea what they might be worth at all?

Cheers

Rob

These?

They're lovely, I've got a 952 XTR groupset on my Ti hardtail. Very retro. 🙂

They will fit if you buy an octalink BB for them...

They do need the M95x bottom brackets though, normal octalink is a different spline

Road ones fit too (with the right axle length) 112/116 were the two M950/1/2 options - so pick one closest to either of these.

Thanks for that, didn't realise you could still get hold of bottom brackets to fit these cranks. Also just realised they actually have five arms & not 4 as the picture posted by crazy legs shows. Not sure if this makes a difference?

Means you have 48/36/26 rings rather than 46/34/24.

Also means that replacement rings are easier to source as they use a 110 BCD spider, whereas the 4 arm used a unique BCD and the big ring is the spider....

I have a set on my hartail which I got from a friend. They get used every day as it's my commuting bike, and I've had no problems with them. The BB must have done 3000 + miles now and it's still perfect, no squeeks, rattles or grinding noises despite a low maintainence schedule. The only place I can find a new BB is Merlin,

http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/Bike+Shop/MTB++Parts/Transmission++Gears/Bottom+Brackets/Shimano+Splined+XTR+BB+2002+Model_177.htm

I know £55 seems a lot for a BB, but it's worth it. Maybe tighten the crank arms up a couple of time a year, but thats it.

The problem I do have though, is the middle ring is very worn and could do with replacing (other 2 are fine) but no-one has any replacements. I'm not sure what other rings would fit. Middleburn maybe ?

If someone could bung me a link I'd be grateful. Cheers

The BBs aren't cheap, I certainly didn't find they lasted that well either, they're heavier than SLX, flexier, and identical rings are expensive (although as above, with the 5 arm ones you can use different ones).

They do look good, but I'd not be using them now.

Madison list the new BBs, so I'd assume they were available to order.

Best BB i've ever used, has done a lot of winter miles and long distance stuff in the highlands.

I went for the middleburn spider, mount it with lots of loctite and you can run any standard shimano 4 bolt chainring.
