Anyone know where an old school wheel builder can be found.
Want someone who does spoke soldering! Seems to be a dieing art.
on-one used to advertise this service.

chaz is your man... v good wheel builder IMO
Neil thankyou!! Just what I needed. ๐
Spoke soldering?
Now one on me - soldering the spokes directly to the rim/nipple?
ha ha
no soldering the spokes together where they cross.
Why not just DIY it's not difficult
To be pedantic, it's tied and soldered. Wire wrapped round then soldered to stop it coming undone.
Saw these Wheel GuruIf you are in the NW area.

Interesting. Is it an old-style road thing?
Chaz has done a number of wheels for us inc a superlight tie and solder set - top wheel builder!
Why not just not bother?
What is the purported benefit...more stiffness? Bound to increase fatigue.
Stronger and stiffer wheel!!
18 bikes offered to do this for me for a tandem rear wheel. Can yo still true the wheel afterwards?
I didn't do so in the end - just used a strong rim and high spoke tension
Wheelcraft in Glasgow might do it

Yes, used to be all the rage for both track and cyclo-cross wheels, allegedly making the wheels stiffer. You used to be able to buy kits to DIY it.
Not seen it for ages though.
Its for a cross rear wheel.
Still done loads in pro peleton. Especially in spring classics wheels!
We at 18 Bikes still offer tying and soldering if required.
Tried calling Matthew H and have left a mesg!
As other Matt (Matthew_H) has said, we can do this. The advantages are a stiffer wheel due to effectively increasing the diameter of the flanges. You also prevent the spokes from wearing each other away as the wheel flexes, but we don't see this very often anyway and the wheel is usually toast in other ways. The wheel can still be trued after and spokes can be replaced (I'd probably replace a pair rather than just one as it would be easier to cut them out than de-solder). It can be done to black spokes and still looks good too.
One of my own wheels is tied and soldered and I haven't had any issues with it.
