This is on the to-do list for our trip, but it's quite tricky to judge how hard day 1 is from Lyell. I'd probably be fine to go all the way to Ghost lake on day 1 (or further), but the misses is just a occasional sunny day rider, so don't want to over cook it.
I calculate the trip up to Lyell hut to be same distance and ascent as 1 Borrowdale Bash, but the BB is several steep ups and downs, I belive the OGR star is much more mellow?
Thanks!
You may struggle for answers on the OGR on here, why not try Facebook and the NZ bikepacking group and Tour Aotearoa group?
You’ll get to Ghost Lake fine. It’s a steady uphill to Lyell then a couple of more tech bits then a bit of a traverse. Ghost Lake is amazing, I’d say that as I spent 4 weeks up there building the bloody thing ! Incredible track and journey in an increasingly rare bit of proper wilderness.
How long for a slow rider Col? We might not be starting till lunchtime.

This is our first day to stern hut. Ghost lake is popular so get booking. Fantastic ride we had great weather. It can be a bit grim on the top before you drop to ghost lake if the weather is poor.
I did it with my GF who was pretty new to riding at the time and didn't exercise very often. We stayed at Lyell saddle hut and then at Stern Valley.
The elevation profile on the website is very deceptive. Try and check elevation profiles on peoples Strava rides of it.
This is not a timeline for mere mortals: 2.5 days for OGR and Heaphy back to back! 😮
Planning on doing this in March.
Mikey, will be taking the mason bokeh with 2 inch 650b tyres on it. Underbiked or should that be ok??
