Hello
my father inlaw is hoping to restore an old Volvo Cannondale F2000SX mtb that has been hanging in his garage unused for the last decade.
he's asked me for advice but im no use so have in turn come to you... First problem is the brakes, ive never seen brakes like these or even this flavour of side mounted calliper before, but they are completely seized up.
Are these or similar still available for straight replacement, or what are my options for a modern set with the mounting points as they are? Any advice please...
Many thanks
.
There Coda Expert brakes I think, you might want to check that the hubs are not 4 bolt instead of 6 bolt as that would cause issues when upgrading. They were never great so I would get some new ones as I wouldn't know where you would parts from.
The mounts look IS to me so you should be fine with most non-post mount type.
Can you measure the distance between the mooting bolts? If IS it should be 51mm, and you can get adapts easy enough - I've got PM Hope callipers mounted to 160mm IS adaptors F&R.
Pretty sure they're standard IS mounts for the calipers though as above, there were certainly 4 bolt rotors on Cannondales around that time.
Hope will probably be able to make new rotors should you need them (at a cost via any Hope dealer) - I've had Hope 4 bolt rotors in the past (and may actually still have a couple)
The mounts are IS on the CAAD frame and the lefty. You'll be able to replace those with either IS or postmount with an adapter without problem. I tend to find with the older cannondales though that you need longer mounting bolts and a couple of spacers for the caliper to reach the disc.
Cheers.
so to clarify, you reckon i can mount modern calipers but would need new rotors and in turn new 6 bolt hubs?
i can mount modern calipers
Almost certainly yes, with IS to post mount adapters (or find some older IS calipers on the classifieds) - basically, your frame/fork almost certainly have IS mounts. New brakes come with post mount (PM).
but would need new rotors and in turn new 6 bolt hubs?
Depends whether they're 4 bolt rotors/hubs at present or not. If they are and you get new brakes that need different sized rotors then you'd need either new (6-bolt/CL) wheels or some 4 bolt rotors (as I mentioned above).
If you new what size rotors they were you could find callipers that would fit. If there 185 and 165 you should be able to get an old set of brakes with IS mounts.
UK Bike Store online shop sell CODA 4 bolt Hope discs in various sizes so you can keep your 4 bolt Coda hubs if you want. They are special order from Hope so take a few days extra and a couple of quid more. Hope have all the templates stored so they cut you a brand new one.
Cheers LD. My dog is called Larry David btw...
Mrs oab has that frame, with different forks. She had those brakes, they too seized and were rubbish even when rhey did work.
She has a Hope mono mini brakes on now, with adaptor as the rotors are slightly odd size and it was cheaper to get an adaptor than new discs or hubs/wheels. They are 'odd' 4 bolt rotors.
Great bike.
