typical situation: come back from a ride, bike's muddy (or snowy), you wash it off, do you then: (a) wait for it to dry THEN oil it, (b) oil it straight away?
I tend to put a bit of fenwick's thin oil on the rear mech, front mech, then towel-dry the chain and oil that.
but just wondered if it's better to oil it when completely dry of water or if it doesn't matter

Yeah, GT85 or WD40 are both supposed to displace water anyway so spraying sorts it in one simple task.

After washing it
If you take a bucket of very hot water & a soft brush & quickly rinse it off - it dries very quickly

I oil mine wet. Can't imagine it makes a huge difference.

Always wondered how rust contributes to wear. Recently read that unoiled chains were tested as being of equivalent efficency to oiled ones (on rsoad bikes IIRC)

ok, good point about the GT85 displacing water. i do normally use that when I haven't left it over my mate's house.

does anybody else employ the method of putting a carrier bag over the disk rotor to protect it ?

Wash bike, bounce it a few times to shake most of the water off, leave it to drip dry while I shower, oil chain, put bike away.
Its worked for me for the past fifteen years or more, if I forget to oil the chain (or clean the bike) its definitely rusty next time I come to use the bike.
