[Closed] Oakleys - best for mtb and ski?

[#4193522]

Tried a few different ones last year, and quite liked the fast jacket / fast jacket XL.
Flak jacket was also nice, but concerned whether lens depth was enough to stop mtb mud splatter...

Radar look a bit roadie???

Didn't buy, because a) very expensive, b) Adidas Evil Eyes were doing very well.

Evil Eye clear lenses are now knacked and the locking strip has broke - so its spend on repairs or replace.

Any forum users ride or ski in any of these? The light / dark lens combo on the fast jackets makes them expensive, but usable for mtb and skiing.

Was quite partial to risers and bar ends - back in the day. Nice variety of grip positions, particularly as where I lived at the time included lots of on-road links 😉

Anyhow - back to the skiing...

I really do not see the point in wearing gogs unless the weather is grotty, even with a helmet.

and goggles on the terrace at lunchtime = fail

Radars

I also have Jawbones and Flak Jackets, but still find the Radars the best for both activities.

Agreed - but definitely sunglasses for ski/splitboard touring and goggles for the descents! 8)

have just tried to get a pair of genuine splitjackets repaired by oakley, my how they've fallen since their buyout.

In the past the customer service has been very good to me, this time i needed a replacement hinge bolt (a tiny nutted bolt made from alloy that had broken). On advice from a very friendly Oakley salesperson i was told to contact their customer service department who deal with all repairs etc. When i called i was told by a heavily accented chap they wouldn't supply me a bolt, or a pair of bolts and they wouldn't even take them in for a paid repair, instead they would only offer a replacement frame as an option at around £65. So it would appear that oakley are now a disposable product as there is absolutely no way that those bolts are so expensive they write off the frame.

Still i fixed the broken bolt using a spoke and continue to use them, but i will be very unlikely to drop any money on Oakley in the future for riding glasses.

In short, dont buy for the customer service and warranty anymore, buy for looks and lens quality only.

Flak Jacket XLJ with polarised lenses for MTB, Snow and Sea here. My only issue with them is that they dont float

Don't listen to the fashion police. Goggles are awful for spring skiing if the weather is nice

Really? I returned some 4 year old US-bought White Chrome Jawbones a few months ago, the finish had gone a bit rubbish, they replaced the frame for £15 and sent me 2 new nose pieces. I'm happy.

You're either wearing the wrong goggles or not riding/ski-ing hard enough!

Not sure about that - almost opposite I'd say. I tend to ski the same as riding - until my heart and lungs can't keep up with my legs. Almost always get very, very hot when skiing.

Coldest I've skiied at was -40C at the top of Punta Helbronner - that was a bit nippy and the goggles were much appreciated. But most of the time I find goggles are just too hot. I almost always carry them in case the weather turns.

Anyway - back to mtb.

Nobody tried the fast jackets?

I snowboard, so it's law that i wear goggles rather than sunnies!!

besides when you're actually moving they're not hot, just when you stop for a beer. but then i take them off. or put them on the side of my head* to look like i'm down with the kids!!

*I have actually never done this.

Until I got flack jacket XLJs, I always wore goggles snowboarding. I do look a tart tho.
