I've been commuting into work occasionally since Spring (30 km each way, main road all the way) and it typically takes about an hour going in and 70-75 minutes coming home.
I have killed the road bike (rear derailleur into rear wheel, smashed to pieces and jammed agains the seat stay) so I thought I'd ride in on the 29er hardtail today and lo and behold, it took exactly the same time both ways.
I was expecting it to be significantly slower. Why isn't it, please?

Equally as fast doesn't mean equally as difficult.

Or, put another way - you haven't been trying.

That may actually be the truth.
