[Closed] Not as hardcore as I thought, 130/140 Trail FS frame only suggestions

Afternoon Folks

Having built up a nicely specced Orange Crush 29er Custom recently I was staggered to find out just how accustomed I was to riding the FS. Its not just that the lack of rear travel is flaring up old back injuries, but my A$$ is sore from the constant pounding. I think I have just lost all technique and ability to pilot a hard tail properly!

So, what are the options to swap the parts onto a 130/140mm BOOST, 29er FS frame only?

The Orange Stage 5 is frankly too burly and its expensive for a single pivot! Plus, its not got bottle bosses, well, not in a sensible place for UK riding!

What else is out there? I want a light, usable allrounder, ideally with a bottle cage which I know will limit frame designs.

Cotic Flare MAX?

Thanks, Dave

Maybe Orange Stage Evo? Still decent geometry but a bit less travel.

I can relate to that... Doesn't help that I'm 20kg heavier than when I used to ride hardtails more often than not.

Its not just that the lack of rear travel is flaring up old back injuries, but my A$$ is sore from the constant pounding.

You shouldn't be sat down on the technical stuff, but you knew that already... I find my biggest issue on a HT is my legs take an absolute pounding, compounded by the fact that my additional 20kg is almost entirely carried in my upper body! I get to the bottom of a bumpy descent on my HT, and I need to sit down and massage my legs... Full sus, even a short travel one, not a problem!

Budget for the frame... No point me suggesting a Yeti if you don't have the best part of £4k to drop on one...

Stanton switch9er fs? Look lovely, though personally I'd go for a 27.5 version.

I just bought one of those. Not built up as I'm still too sick to ride, but the Supernova Orange colour is lovely.

The Pace RC295 has a bottle cage and 135mm travel.

I'd bet good money the stage 5 will be lighter than the flare max.

And more perky to ride.

Can't argue about the cost and lack of bottle cage compatibility though.

I got fed up with my hardtail and replaced the frame with a used stage 4 (and angleset). It's the perfect FS bike for keeping some of that hardtail sense of connection to the ground but going quicker and staying more comfy.

I’d take the Flaremax anyday over the Orange option.

Might be worth considering the new Pace 29er and Bird have the Aether 9C coming in the next few months that might do the job. Suspect both of those would be lighter than the Flaremax.

Banshee Prime V3.
The KS2 linkage works a treat, I'm climbing a gear or 2 higher on my V3 Rune compared to my old V2 Spitfire, despite it weighing a Kg more.

Thanks for all the replies. Will check them out. Didn’t realise big brands like Trek and Spesh sold frames only...

I had exactly the same but I persisted... I'm actually glad I did as I'm now really enjoying the HT and mostly gone from the 150mm aggressive HT onto my 100mm travel HT. I wouldn't want it as an only bike but I have massive fun riding it where I'm pushing it... plus after a long 'gravelish' loop yesterday I reckon I'm less sore than I would have been dragging a 130mm FS round.

Can some explain to me what a “shart travel platform” is? I was just pondering Orange ownership but it sounds a bit 💩

Fuel EX.a.good shout. Amazingly plush for the travel, climbs well, quick on swoppy singletrack, and handles rocky stuff and small ish drops if you pick your lines a bit.

A Bird Aether 7 would be my choice.

I would have suggested Aether 7 but he’s not fitting 29er wheels on that....

I think the Trek option is a good one - either Fuel EX or even a Top Fuel.

I bought a used Kona shred for Farting about on the local trails. Lovely bike, but ( due to my decrepitude) it broke me. So I bought a used 09 spesh enduro fsr. Now I'm enjoying shredding the trail's & I'm not crippled for a week afterwards 😁

I have just come to the same conclusion. I stripped my FS to build a new HT which I thought would be a do it all. However I soon missed having rear suspension and have already started looking at ways of building the FS back up. I blew too much money on bits for the new HT so it's going to be a real budget build!

I missed the part about 29 wheels so when it arrives the Bird Aether 9.

Nukeproof Reactor was going to be my suggestion, but it seems that the days when Nukeproof offered good value for money are gone and they are at Santa Cruz alloy prices!
CRC how much

I'm really liking the look of the new nukeproof frames but I know what you mean about the prices.

I'd wait until Christmas when the 2021 stock has arrived and the weather has turned and crc have a 30 to 50% sale on the 2020 model.
