Need to get a bike rack that can hold 4 bikes (2 adult & 2 kids) It has to fit two different types of car Micra & Vectra neither of which have a towbar. Halfords is only a few miles from where I live but I am wary of what they may have available. This is based on a purchase of a Paddy Hopkirk rack from Halfords in the mid 1990's so probably a bit of an out of date opinion.
Pendals strap on rank will hold 3 full size bikes. I think 4 might be a push for any strap on rack.
Are roof bars an option?

Guess you have a point about 4 bikes on a Micra or 4 bikes using a strap on rack. Hmmm, ponder time.
Our boot rack 3 bike rack is a Halfords advance (old Thule design) and uses steel straps. I put it on, clamp it up tight and can then swing my not inconsiderable weight off it and rck the car side to side with it. I don't like the soft strap ones, I even less like how many are badly fitted.
I would buy one again. The only downside is that it chips the edge of the boot lid (despite helicopter tape), and has killed our boot struts.
I would also point out that on a 7 seat Touran, the bike rack helped kill the rear suspension dampers and wheel bearings prematurely, and also is noticeably heavy going round corners. On a Micra, with 4 bikes on 😯
