[Closed] "non-standard" Shimano hollowtech crankset endcap

[#4440297]

I'm a bit perplexed. The bottom bracket on my road bike has finally packed in, however I'm having some bother getting the left crank arm off, because the endcap remover tool I have doesn't fit the endcap properly. The cranks are 2008 Tiagra. My endcap remover is an 'icetools' one, which I've used successfully on XT cranks on my MTB.

The endcap looks similar to the one on my XT cranks, except the star shape is a bit smaller, and is only slightly recessed (there isn't a hole in it, if that makes sense, difficult to explain).

Is there more than one type of hollowtech endcap design? I can't find anything on the net about this. Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks

Mine is filled in rather than straight through like a mountain bike one but the same tool does the job. Did you loosen the pinch bolts first?

you can often get a mtb one off with a 20p piece if, err, you've lost your tool again ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Some of the earlier Hollowtech (one?) cranks have smaller end caps (15mm rather than 20mm). I used a tigra one to replace the LX ones on my Five. You should still be able to get it out with a bit of force.

Thanks for the replies.

@onzadog - yes, I loosened the pinch bolts.

I'll have a route around in the toolbox, sure I can find something that'll get it off!

Hone (& older LX) do indeed have a smaller dia preload cap, but I'm sure the tool is the same as the later ones. I have Hone & XT M770 & I'm sure the tool fits both.

Yeah, same tool for Hone / newer stuff.

If I can't find the tool when I need it, a set of external circlip pliers does the job pretty well!
