[#10460425]

Hi,

I have an Orbea Occam TR which is now about 8 weeks old. It has Shimano SLX/XT 1x11 gears and shifts perfectly and is very quiet when dry. However, as soon as it gets even the slightest bit wet it is really noisy in the lowest 3 or 4 gears (Largest cogs) when pedalling hard e.g up hills. I have tried different chain lubes but not much difference.

Anyone had this before?
It is my first 1x11 setup through the Winter but sure it is not quite right. The bike shop who set it up have left no adjustment on the barrel connector to reduce cable tension. Increasing it makes it worse so will try loosening off the cable and putting a few turns on the barrel so I can adjust it better and try that.
Bike has only done about 100 - 150 miles and has done it from new.
Thanks

That has always been a 'feature' of narrow wide chainrings for me especially in gritty/sandy conditions when they start growling as they and the chain gets dirty.

Try wheezing louder to cover the noise?

yes I think that's a common thing with 1x transmissions and it's mainly the chain contact at the chainring. This may not help if you have shimano cranks but the SRAM eagle steel chainrings are about the best (quietest) I've tried - others being RaceFace, Superstar and SRAM GX 11spd

Thanks for the quick replies!
It is sandy where I generally ride so probably doesn't help. I was was wheezing a fair amount btw but it's still annoying ๐Ÿ™‚
Will see how it goes over the next few weeks and may swap out the chain ring.
Loving the bike apart from that but I guess it's a small price to pay for not having a front derailleur.
Anyone recommend a decent chain lube to get through the Winter or is that opening a can of worms ๐Ÿ™‚

I'd echo what joemmo said - the standard cheap steel SRAM ones I have are certainly quieter.

That is a can of worms for sure - I've always used finish line green but it is sticky and thick but worked and lasted well but suffered from sticky build up. I recently ran out and tried Muc Offs winter one that is not quite as thick and sticky and its seems to be better on the whole for me.

If it's sandy I'd be inclined to use Smoove as it's not sticky like a wet lube, and lasts longer than Squirt in the wet.

Also Progold and W&S (3 or 5) but these are wet and will likely attract sand, like any wet lube.

I mainly ride in a sandy area and also use Smoove.
Seems really good.

Don't forget to wipe off any excess oil after applying

Just to update incase anyone else was having the same issue, muc off ceramic wet has worked well for me. The first time I used it I put too much on and it attracted loads of dirt but I degreased the chain and tried again with much less and made sure all excess was wiped off. Just been for a very muddy, wet ride and shifting was spot on and virtually silent all the way round so very happy.
