[Closed] Noisey freehubs

I'm firmly with you on this one. My Giant Anthem is perfectly silent when free wheeling, I would find noisey buzzing freehubs very annoying. Can you quieten them a bit by lightly oiling the pawls ?

my DT Swiss sounds like a A10 gun run.
probably the only thing stopping me pulling the trigger on some Hunt Aeros at moment

My Onyx Vesper hubs are great. Noticeably less drag as well.

I am indifferent. I have had both noisey (chris king & Indsutry 9) and fairly silent ones, neither give me a preference.

the joy of a noisy one, is people hear you coming, so tend to move out of the way earlier.

I like a freehub that sounds like an angry hornets nest, but wouldn't mind trying a silent hub too.

Only issue with a silent hub is that every other creak or rattle your bike makes can be heard...

Noisier the better for me.

Got reasonably loud freehubs (not Chris King loud) on my Hunt wheels. I like it, and as v7fmp said up there - people hear you coming.

Prefer silence myself.
One benefit might be that noisy freehubs cover other less intensional sounds from the bike.

I love the noise. There is a bit in The Collective film, where all is quiet and just before dropping in for a run, the rider winds back his crank to a loud click click click click as the camera closes in on his rear cassette. Then he drops in.

From that point on, to me, its the sound of intent.

On descents, when it gets faster, you can actually hear your speed.

Rediscovered a bit of singletrack near the house today, quite a few folk walking on it and not one heard my Pro2 SS hub.

Might have to give the freehub a strip down...

I paid particular attention to mine whilst out today. You would love it.

It’s OK, I’ve just fitted a set of XM1501s to my Mtb after the recent Psa.  36t ratchet and a dodgy spring, can’t wait to hear them.

Back on topic I’ve got a set of old XTR hubs on my gravel bike, they’re silent, my road bike has D370s, the free hub sounds like a swarm of angry hornets which is great for letting my mates know I’m in their draft and to work a bit harder.

Love a noisy freehub - generally reduce the grease in mine to make em louder..!

All the good quality wheels I’ve had over the years have had a freehub that makes noise, I like it for the reasons above, and also breaks the silence when freewheeling between pedalling on a descent.

Yeah, the noise can be handy but there are occasions when out in a lovely bit of countryside where the noise can be an anachronism occasionally.

Overall I have to put up with it anyway as I really like Hope hubs. Their other stuff, not fussed, but the hubs are great.

i used to like noisy freehubs ... but then i switched to a kazoo.

1. It has a massive advantage in that you can vary the tune - flight of the Valkyries is good for downhill smashing, Italian Job for flow. You choose. What's not to like (see 2)

2. It has a massive disadvantage in that you can easily choke on a kazoo.

Or a playing card rubbing the spokes, held on the frame with an elastic band. Cheaper than a Chris King

I have a playing card taped to the seat stay that catches the spokes. 😉

(I actually have a Pro2, Pro4 and Novatec hubs and find the Novatec the loudest)

Don't mind noise on the MTB, but silent all the way on the road bike. Ain't noone needs to know that I'm freewheeling at the back of the bunch!

FWIW, I use a thicker grease on the ratchet when I want them quieter, and a thin oil if I need "the full Hope".
