Any ideas as to what to look for when I take the pesky thing to bits? Retrofit mission control damper with gate (and before it's mentioned - the correct amount and weight of oil).

I'm not sure which version of the moco you have but the orientation of the metal disc at the foot of the damper is critical. Besides that, just look for any obvious broken bits. And then I'm out of ideas.
