[#3540772]

Is immense! Finally got out last night for a wee try out(first time)cycled out from glasgow city centre through kelvingrove/milngavie up the whw till it got dark(only went as far as to the bottom off dumgoyac) then turned back to head for milngavie in the pitch blackness. So point was just a short taster. Tis great, going to head out for a complete darkness ride through the week, try a bit of singletrack this time!

I think I'm hooked though, just something different about it, completely different atmosphere, very spooky and eery! You feel as if you are riding much faster too.

Also mj872, these are bonkers in complete darkness, 25% is more than enough! 😀

Anyhow, why have I never done this before? 😀

Also any recommendations on a head torch to suppliment the mj872? I can see sharp turns being an issue!

It's only about 8 or 9 miles so not far, I usually head down to the clyde and then over the secc bridge into kelvingrove, that takes you up to maryhill road, traffic free, then the road up to milngavie, there's another way you can go following the river into minlgavie, but I've never done that as yet.

Night riding is great fun. Our group goes out most Monday nights from Milgavie Train Station. Usual fare is WHW, Carbeth, Carglas, Mugdock, and maybe some of Dougalston.

The path along the river is not the best from Maryhill to Milngavie, extremely muddy in parts, and there are a few fence crossings. Part of it is along a narrow path right on the bank of the Kelvin, not something for this time of year, with high, fast water.

Other route you might like is canal out to Bishopbriggs, take path through Cawdor Golf Club, out to Balmore, then up backroads to Baldernock and on to Mugdock.

Night riding is brilliant because you focus on the trail much more than getting distracted by everything around you. Your riding becomes much smoother as a result. Last winter was my first full "night season" and it made such a difference to my riding.

I use one of the cheap ebay cree torches cable tied to the helmet, something like this;

Tesco do a cree torch for a £10er, have used it helmet mounted and it is fine. Not as bright as a magicshine, but a decent enough second light.

Alternative XML torch for your helmet.

Otherwise maybe a MS clone XML unit
