[#1573828]

I’ve got a Nicolai AM and currently have a normal Hope headset fitted. I know the warranty is only valid if it has a deep set. The main one i can see is the CK steelset but i don’t hear good things about it in regards to movement and scoring. The main reason I’m asking is I’ve got more into chucking myself of jumps and just want to find out what the options are and what other people with AM's have fitted. Cheers

Why don't you fit a Nicolai one?

I know the warranty is only valid if it has a deep set.

then why sell them without one? just seems odd that you need x part on your bike to validate your warranty but not supplied with the frame.

not having a dig just very surprised, thought better of nicolai.

There are a few options though so why limit customers to just one?

Your warranty is only invalidated if its a headtube issue you have. I'm taking that risk on my S/H frame- they aren't exactly built light!

why not design a head tube that doesn't need deep cups, then there's hundreds of options not just a few.

You don't want to use a nicolai headset - I've seen smaller bearings holding car wheels on - no, really! The one off my 2mxtb must have weighed at least a pound.

As mentioned they aren't built light. Can't see you ovalising it with a standard headset.

There are plenty of peeps riding AMs without deep insert cups although I do have one in mine. In the AM I have a Reset Racing and in the Ion ST I have a CK Steel Set. I've had zero problems with either although the CK was a bitch to get in. I haven't heard about the problems with scoring though. With somethign as precision made as the Nic and Chris King, I can't imagine there would be any issues.

When I bought the AM the shop said that off the record, they wondered whether I would really need a deep insert cups. I agreed, but since I was going to buy one anyway, I thought I may as well get a deep insert one fitted at the factory.

It has to be 20mm deep IIRC.

My 2p - the Hope headset will be fine in a Hope headset kind of way. I think the sealing is a bit suspect because mine was full of cack after a year but because the bearings are stainless there was no corrosion. When you "Need" a new headset get a deep cup job. FWIW I like the ACROS headsets - well sealed and deep cup but not stupid heavy like the Nicolai FET set.

The Nicolai FET set is daft heavy at about 500g. I have one in my spare parts box - I picked it up cheap and will either sell it or hang on to it as a frame saving option; it would survive a direct hit from a nuclear weapon.

PS - my Helius AM will have a 1.5" headtube and an ACROS headset 8)
