I have a set of maxxis xenith that might come out for summer, I was planning on using some old WTB velociraptor but think they may be a bit of a drag.

Whats good?

I have used conti travel contact and sport contact Both come with a tube and with a puncture proof gurentee - and they really are good for punctures - a sliver of glass will slowly work thru but I rate both tyres

Agree with the bike chain, I used specialized fatboys for a while until they spectacularly exploded! The Marathon pluses are indestructable

I use Schwalbe Marathon Plus and cannae fault them. Haven't tried anything else though so they might be pish for all I know! ;O)

They look grand, roll easily and I've never had a puncture. Used them for commuting and the odd stupidly ambitious road ride on an MTB.
