Could a NFC tag be used to trigger a timer on an Android phone? Along the lines of those Freelap timing poles but using one NFC tag to start the timer and another to stop it? I can't find any firm range data (that I understand) but I have found the read time which is 1-2ms.
Just an idle thought I just had to see if race timing could be made cheaper.

NFC range on a phone is a few cm.

Although tags are cheap enough, I might buy one anyway and try it out

I'm looking at using the camera and detecting someone going past. (I've just about finished an app that does race timing using button presses, this would be an opional extra. if anyone wants to try it let me know. - android only).
