Hi guys. Looking to get a freeride bike. Ive ridden bmx for about 12 years and have got sick of the attitude other bmx riders have got and its taken the fun out of riding a bike. i live a short distance from leith hill and can see the top from my bedroom window. so really it makes sense to buy a mountain bike. ive come across a 2003 kona stinky at the right price. is this a good bike to start on? my budget is quite tight at the moment as i have a few car projects on the go but desperate to get back on the bike and blast through the woods. Is there anywhere else local to the leith hill/ coldharbour good to ride? Any advice/tips would be great!
Thanks, Sean.

P.s hope this is in the right place?!

Depends what sort of riding you want to do. There's not a huge amount of the sort of riding that would justify a Stinky on Leith Hill TBH.

If you're just into jumps, drops, etc then you might be OK but I'd have thought a 6in travel trail bike like a Lapierre Spicy, Spec Enduro, etc would handle even the biggest local stuff and would be much more fun to ride on the singletrack that makes up most of the Surrey hills riding.

You'll need to hook up with others to find the good stuff. Try asking at Nirvana, Head for the Hills and Pedal & Spoke about local rides.

BTW what's wrong with the attitude of BMXers?

cheers for the reply. bmxers these days are so desperate to get sponsored and film video parts that they have forgot how to go out and just ride their bike for fun. i remember the days when i could go out and make countless new riding friends in one day. nowadays ill go out no one will say hello. you have to have the latest parts and do the latest 'fasionable' tricks to be in the 'gang'. just got sick of it really. i see mountain bikers about and they remind me of when i first started riding bikes.

German web shops sometimes have great deals.

Maybe something like this? http://www.jehlebikes.de/bergamont-big-air-62-2012.html

Fair enough.

There are lots of people just having fun riding their bikes in the Surrey hills. Nirvana organise some jumpy / freeridey rides. I'd start there

with stabilisers, and their dads running behind holding their collars?

to make the most of the area, you need a trail bike (and you'll be a bit over-biked, but you can use it elsewhere too of course) or an XC bike

there are people who hang out/ride with Nirvana cycles who are more into jumps and freeride btw, you could give them a call and see what the current ride schedule is
