What spacer thing?? You should have the carrier with half the sprockets on, the remainder of sprockets which go on in sequence plus the lock ring.

Did you get it from ribble...as mine came loose in packaging and having to piece it together too.
Search shimano techdocs for the answer.

Is it the 1mm spacer? I discovered I need it for my mavic crossrides on a 10 speed setup. Mavic spacer plus shimano.

Yes from Ribble but sorted now, cheers. Fenred - it was the black spacer that is fitted about 3 sprockets in.
