Hi all, wondering whether anyone can confirm/refute my thinking on a floppy cassette.
I have purchased a new Shimano XT CS-M8000 11-46T rear cassette. It is to replace a 42T cassette (Shimano XT CS-M8000 11-42T), and is going on a Transition Revolution rear hub. The new cassette is floppy. If I hold opposite sides of the largest cog and wobble it, there's a couple of mil of play. On the old cassette there's a bit of play but less; maybe half a mil.
The lock ring has been cranked down good and tight in both cases.
It seems a bit odd to me, given that both cassettes are largely "the same".
What is the fix here? A small spacer to go behind the largest cassette cog? Will everything be okay chain-alignment-wise?

Are you sure the play is in the cassette not freehub ???
Looks like it needs a spacer, although it's not clear why you would. It's possible one fell out when you were fitting it...?
Yup,as above sounds like spacer needed.
Thanks all. I got a spacer, and then I couldn't get the lockring to engage. Removed the spacer, and it seems to now have a tolerably small amount of play. Seems I just needed to try it a few times. Doh.
Had the same with a Sunrace one recently.
Prefer XD cassettes to avoid this kind of thing if I can.
There should be no play at all. Something is plainly not right.
I had the same issue with an 11-42 XT cassette. The spacer was missing. Found it, fitted it and tightened the lock ring and there is no play at all now.
weird.. never had a spacer on mine that i can recall :S
Freehubs that can accept 11 speed road cassettes are wider than those designed around MTB 9/10/11 speed cassettes and need a small spacer on the freehub.

Having fallen foul of this before, this is right.
Check the old cassette it may well be glued to the old cassette with grease, it's that thin you can easily miss it.
