It's about time i replaced my oblong DT Swiss H1900 wheels. For the money is there anything better than the Nukeproof Horizon V2 wheels? I seem to read a bit about Hunt and Halo wheels not being so tough. As its for my ebike i would rather prioritise toughness over weight. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Also the forum search function sucks
not sure what your budget is, and a quick google search suggests a rear NP V2 is c £250, but if you can stretch the budget to c £280-300 for a rear, my go to wheels for the e-bike is stans flow EX3 rim on hope pro 4 hub. pretty much bomb proof / fit and forget wheels. the EX3 rims will take a beating whilst not being overly heavy and are a doddle to set up tubeless, and the hope hubs have never failed me in years of riding them (given the pro 5 is out now, the pro 4 might be reduced in costs as well?). on my third set of these wheels over the past 5 years (one on the enduro bike, one on an e-bike that got nicked and current e-bike) and never had an issue with them. for reference i'm a 16.5 stone rider, riding a lot of rocky peak descents at a reasonable speed in a non too delicate manor - light and floaty i am not!
I’d be buying a secondhand set of DT Swiss EX1700. I’ve got a few sets of them for swapping between the ebike & the big leg bike & they are pretty much bomb proof.
You can pick them up for about £300 normally.
Oh er...stealth add alert..I've a set of dt swiss xm 1700 for sale,
There the second from top of the range wheelset rrp £680
650b boost std 6 bolt
Sram xd freehub
Fully taped from the factory for tubeless
Dt swiss 350 ratchet
Bought from crc/wiggle eBay page as new other and apart from grease on the freehub threads they look brand new
Bought when board last month was going to build my son a bike but he's not interested
Happy with £320 can deliver as I have the boxes
Mavic E-Deemax here. Ratchet hub, easy tubeless ... bit spendy but buy once, buy well...
Just get the H1900's rebuilt onto some of the higher end welded DT EMTB rims, most of the DT rims have the same ERD so you could probably re-use the spokes.
Been eyeing up the Silt Kilowatt ones at £320 for my Vitus. Have a good rep on some of the ebike groups, run by ex Nukeproof and Hunt folks.
The rims are quite soft on the silt be careful.......pb and stw have all dented them in testing and looking at Phil atwills bike the new ones aren't fairing any better on his bike
EX511 on Hope Pro 4 have survived all that my fat, ham-fisted arse can throw at them.
Just picked up mullet set of Pro 5 with Fortus 3 rims for £430 Brand new
Another vote for Silt. Got a rear XC wheel from them last week and early days, but so far so good.
The wheels that both STW and PB broke the rim of were then carbon ones. I'm assuming you'd go aluminium.
Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I stretched my budget and went for the stans flow ex3 on pro 4 hubs.
I wonder if there is any mileage in lacing up the current DT Swiss wheels onto new rims and selling on?
@edward2000 there's a pair of stans ex3 MK4 on pro4 hubs ending in just under an hour on eBay could be a bargain
I eventually snapped the axle on the original rear wheel of my 2018 Specialized Levo. In the interim I destroyed the ratchet ring and hub shell in a Sun Ringle wheel. E bikes can put down some power and on a pawl based freehub all of that force is transferred though a tiny area. Is it any wonder freehubs fail?
My solution was some DT Swiss with a star-ratchet. All fine so far. I actually think the ratchets with lower number of engagement teeth are likely to be more robust overall.
