Out riding on the weekend, broke a spoke on my rear wheel. Second time it's happened, last time broke 3 spokes, just normal riding (no big jumps/drop offs). It's the standard wheel on a 2007 commencal meta 5.5, a Sun SOS on a commencal hub. I'm a big lad at 17st, and never broke a spoke before, I used to ride a 2004 stumpy with mavic X223's until a couple of months ago.
Should I bin it and by new, or have it rebuilt with stronger spokes? I'm on a budget so I'd have to but secondhand if replacing the wheel, just wondering what to change to if doing so?
Rebuild fine if hub and rim justify it.
What he said. It was probably built reasonably loose which with your weight has meant spokes flexing and now breaking. Get it rebuilt with new spokes and it should be fine.
Buying secondhand carries the risk of another badly built wheel with no comeback.
if your on a budget, just replace that broken spoke, but be aware other spokes will probably break too, so its wheither it worth the cost of replaceing these spokes piece-meal or then get it fully rebuilt now.
Though that I'd also consider the quality of the hub, if it's going to last, then rebuild it, if it's a cheap POS, then just run it till it dies?
I've wheels where I'v broken a spoke, LBS recommended rebuilding but I didn't have the cash, so just had the broken spoke replaced. They're still been fine a year later... you pays your money and takes your chances.
