[#994737]

Just found out about a new trail centre opening in Longmynd Shropshire. There will be an onsite shop and bike hire, campsite, log cabins for hire, full shower facilities, MTB training centre, plenty of waymarked trails and they will even have an onsite pub (which is already there) that serves awesome food!
Due to open April next year, anyone fancy a STW weekend there to test them out??

Oh no.....

They're not going to make all the sheep trails 5ft wide and 'all weather' everything are they?

Do they need a trail centre there or is it more to 'create more in the local economy'? 😐

Not sure about this myself. The main reason for riding on the Mynd is that its chock full of lovely natural singletrack and always feels a little bit more remote and 'special' than places like Llandegla et al. If they are provding facilities at the 'trail head' that's one thing, but if this means (as walleater' says) that the place will end up with a 5 foot wide graded track down Minton Batch then i will be first to the 'barriers' so to speak.

And another thing 🙄

There are already plenty of guides to riding in the area and the legal trails are very well marked. You can pick up guides at the TIC and follow those. Surely thats enough?

Just my two pence worth 😉

Isn't that what you might call a 'need' Hora?

I agree with you ikimbunza. Surely a trail centre would be better developed somewhere else like Mortimer/Bringwood or Hopton. The natural trails round the Long Mynd are why its so enjoyable, why spoil a good thing?

Can't agree more, I love the Long Mynd for it's natural unspoilt and some what remote feeling, introducing more people to the area and dare I say it the leisure riders, will only cause conflict with the army of walkers and destroy the natural trails.
Since they introduced the Kitchener Trail at Sherwood what where lovely bits of single track are now turning into boggy broken down holes with braking bumps on all the lovely berms and corners.Soon it will be a weekend procession of slower riders much like Follow the Dog.
So much for progress!

5ft wide and 'all weather'

Pretty much describes all UK trail centres?

perhaps people could do it as part of the old mid shropshire wheelers sunday ride from back in the day when people rode out rather than drove out..

Start: Brooklands Pub Car Park - Meole Brace, Shrewsbury

Down the path of A49 turn off to Condover out on lanes to base of the Lawley (long grassy hill), over Lawley, then to back of Caer Caradoc

over Caradoc

into Stretton for chocolate cake, pizza and tea at the Burway Cafe

up over cardingmill valley (bikes banned now)

then either highspeed blast down the inward and back to the top again, or striaght down the other side of the mynd to Bridges.

up and over stiperstones (via stiperstone shop to buy cheap out of date snacks) then back via Eastridge to Shrewsbury to via white grit to play on the lead mine slag heaps (also gone now)

happy dayz

Geographically seems well located

Could be good for folk who don't want to go as far as the Welsh centres

up over cardingmill valley (bikes banned now)

Is that kosher, or another troll?

Was up Carding Mill Valley a couple of weeks ago. Mind you it's such a **** pull up at the start of a ride that banning it might be a good idea!

I can confirm that I've heard this from a seperate source (a friend of a guy setting it up).

From what I was told they will not be creating much, if any, new trails, just improving the waymarking on the current ones. (removing or clarifying the ride uk signs for example)

I don't think they are turning the Long Mynd into CYB by any means.

bikes are restricted at certain times - mainly when all the idiots from brum come for some fresh air (fresh air equals sitting in car looking glumly through the windscreen eating a boring sandwich - but wait with the car doors open!)

but people still use it

anyhow there are nicer quiter trails to use so you can avoid the brums..

I rode up Cardigan Valley a couple of weeks ago and there was no bike ban.

I disagree that it's a bad start to a ride - it was our 5th and last ascent of the day - and one of the worst. The little climb up to Townbrook and the tarmac up to the Glider club weren't much fun either.

Heh heh...good morning Scruff.

Rootes1 - that is really spooky, that's exactly what I used to do back in the day, including 'freeriding' at Snailbeach slagheaps then riding back to Shrewsbury in a bitch of a headwind most of the time. Strokes chin....

<<I rode up Cardigan Valley a couple of weeks ago and there was no bike ban.>>

actually looking at the maps, the bit we used to go up is now footpath so insead of going up to this direct to the shooting box you now have to go right at the start of the climb on the bridleway - perhaps the other path has alway been a footpath 😳

to be fair to by memory the old ride as described above was done some year back!

Walleater..
used to do those ride back in around the same time! from 1989/90 to 95 (on tequesta, zaskar, cannondale and a trek!)

with people like ian collins, andrew titley, matt farmer, tim beardsley, tom harper, george, andy caswell, steve brindle etc occasionally dave mellor

Hmmm....I remember Caz had a Zaskar, and Matt F had some other GT for a while (including wrapping it around a tree on Ercall Wood one time...). I was the competitive climbing N@zi either on a Team Marin / Moron, Orange Clockwork or Specialized M2 Team Ed. Jumpers for goalposts / circuit training at the Tech etc....

Thats going to **** up nice nice trails up there then, they'll be made all smooth, wide and then have a rock garden put in to make people think their 6" skill compensators are worth it.

A trail centre could be o.k. using the forest down Priors Holt way, I reckon.
Wouldn't like to see too many more bikers (well, anyone really) cluttering the place up on a busy weekend though, tbh...

Tails - its true!!!!!!!

No they are not planning to widen all the trails! There maybe some trail building but that would be on their own land.

From what i've seen of the plans I think this will be a great destination.

Terrible idea.
Keep everything just the way I like it.
(even though I only get down there every couple of years or so)

Is that the Station Inn at Marshbrook? I've biked from there in the past although mainly around the Hope Valley not up onto the Mynd.

No one seems to have heard about it in Shrewsbury - but heh! There's always a first time! 😆

Rootes, aye that's me. I'm trying to think of someone who rode a GT back in the day (Bobby Blake had Zizang....). Are you extremely tall, made some really crap home made lights and ran over a car once?
