I just ride the stuff I always did and keep an eye out for interesting looking turn offs. Strava hasn't changed how I ride, just how I record it.

Don't think there is a way of finding it other than looking at the number of riders who have ridden it.

I started out looking for segments and planning rides around them but that lasted all of 2 rides. Now I just ride as normal and record it on Strava. It's quite useful actually not gunning for all the KOMs - seeing where you place when you're just riding along is as interesting as really going for it.

Click on "my location" and it'll bring up all the segments near you.

i have created a few segments on my commute, gives me a way of monitoring how i am doing and a way of recording rides.

I'm down to not very many - even the ones I create seem to have already been 'pre-emptively ridden', Jon - but you can have mine if you're prepared to travel ๐Ÿ™‚

I started using this on my commute to and from work as there are a few sections on it but it only seems to randomly record that you have done them which i found annoying as i would like to use it to gauge my fitness levels.
There are also some times on it that i can't beleave that any one can realisticly get either on there own or in on case on a bicycle.

what makes you say that? There are some sections i know that are on a club chain gang and the speed difference between an average fitness solo rider and a bunch of 1st cats, is immense.

Best thing is to click on their ride and work out if it is car assisted or not, usually quite simple.

There's one near me where I'm in second place. All the people beneath me have very similar times, there's maybe 3 seconds between me and 3rd place, another 2 seconds to 4th and so on. The KOM holder is about 15mph quicker then me. Uphill.

That'd be in a car then...

I really like Strava. Adds a bit of competition to riding but i do find it useful for discovering new routes. To be fair that's mostly road routes but i have found a few new off-road segments as well. Plus you discover how much climbing you do, which for those of us too tight to get Garmin is also useful for geeking out on the data.

Go and look at what your followers (or their followers) ride and you can often find interesting new routes.

Regarding the thing about some people being very much faster on a segment that everyone else i think that might be to do with their phone or Garmin not recording properly. In my area there are some KOMs on segments which would be impossible without time travel!

End of the day, just get out and ride and enjoy it.

If you start it when you leave home you might end up publicising exactly where you live. There is a setting that hides the first few hundred metres (or something like that) to keep your start location a mystery - might be worth investigating.

By the way, if anyone has an urge to help me with a little strava project let me know. I've written a little webpage that tells you climbs close to where you are (designed for smartphones). I need to test it a little but once I've done that I'll post the link to it.

The main reason is that the avarage speed for climbing the hill is faster than I hit going down it at 33mph.

Langton matravers suicide descent, 1 mile entirely in a small village, playground, scout hut, parked cars, cars stopping as they can't pass each other... Well named And entirely a 30mph limit.

I like descents and have been known to fly through there at night around 30, but I have not published a 40mph average on strava with my name against it. But Brett Edbrook and others have. To get a 40mph average there was probably a 50mph moment.

I am surprised the villagers have not acted on this and contacted the police (but given the proportion of second homes in the area, i guess many are not even there) It would not be OK in a car, so is equally inconsiderate on a bike. Prosecution would be dead easy with all the published data. and this all has the possibility of making cyclists look like arseholes. If mountain bikers start publishing 30mph averages on foot paths/bridleways, it gives the ramblers something to complain about, and could ultimately threaten our access to the countryside.

Don't become a Stravarsahole.

@ DavidB, that's quality, sums up Strava for me. I love it and hate it in equal measure.
