Ok so I'm in the market for some new brakes as my 8 year old Hope M4s are getting on a bit so it's time for a change. I had been thinking of just going for the newer version of what I have but also interested to see what alternatives there are that work just as well or better.

The only ones that have jumped out at me are the Zee brakes but that's maybe more price orientated given I've never had a set of Shimano brakes in my puff with the only other disc brakes prior to the Hopes being a set of Hayes HFXs which were crap to be fair.

If you just want brakes that work then get the Shimanos. Great value for money and require no fiddling.

i'm using a shimano zee on the front and an slx on the rear and i have to say they are brilliant. masses of power and feel. the low price makes it a bit of a no brainer

((whispers* - the Hope Mini's on mrs_oab's bike are 14 years old and still ace)
But the 'proper' answer is Shimano - having Deore's, SLX and XT on a few bikes now, they just work...however, you will bin them when you need a spare part, unlike the old hope mini's and other hopes....If I had the money, Hope every time.

I like my Hopes (mini's/m4's) but they've been a pain the arse over the years, and the new XT's I got on my last bike are excellent, and for the price of a Hope service you can get a pair of SLX. Might not be able to service them but at that price really.. WGAF?

The hope minis on my Whyte were, and still are crap.

I just swapped some mt6 s for xt. The Shimano's are completely over engineered but so simple to set up (apart from you really need access to a vice to fit the pin).

Yet to ride them, but only heard good things. (Used various hope, avid, magura).
