[Closed] New SLX brake caliper fouling on rotor

They sometimes move as you tighten the bolts. Iirc top bolt tends to push the top in towards the wheel and opposite at the bottom. I think small variations in the finish on caliper and mount/adapter affect any one calipers propensity to move. I have four shimano brakes. One always slips the others do not.

What do you recommend, nip it up and let the rotor machine away the but of caliper body that's fouling it? It doesn't sound nice!

I wouldn't. I'm a bit unsure from your OP which part of the caliper is contacting the disc, I'll presume its to one side?

Have you tried loosely fitting the caliper, installing the pads, refitting the wheel and squeezing the lever whilst tightening the caliper bolts?

 

Yes, done all that. The edge of the rotor is contacting the caliper - it's not side rub, so it's like a circular saw cutting into wood if that makes sense. A slim washer would sort it I guess, but it's not *supposed* to be that way.

i had this on my rear slx caliper, which is used with a hayes rotor.
the front, which has a shimano rotor doesnt have this issue.
ended up using a slim washer to fix it.

I had the same issue with my XT brakes, I'm thinking it's down to the calliper mounts on my bike needing faced. In the end I placed a washer on each bolt for the disk which spaced it out enough to get the caliper centred properly.

I had a similar problem when fitting some shimano brakes then realised I had the mount adapter upside down so I'd recommend checking this

Is it a Shimano rotor? If so then it sounds like a washer to space it out a little is needed.

Adapter is the right way up, think I'll try a slim washer.

Not a shimano rotor but the caliper has been replaced like for like, worked fine with the old one.

Ah, well. Not all rotors are created equal. I had the same problem with some other brands rotor. Spaced it out with a washer in the end.
