Hi guys

I need to replace a knackered Shimano M485 calliper. I don’t want to spend mega bucks (under £50) on the replacement but am going to take the opportunity to upgrade the calliper.

I’ve seen a Shimano M596 calliper complete with levers on CRC for £42, or just the M596 calliper for £25.

Is it worth an extra £17 for the new lever (i.e. will there be any performance benefit), or am I as well to save a few beer tokens and stick with my existing Deore M485 lever?

Cheers

Ade

The M596 is a better quality lever, but it mainly comes down to feel. The M485 has a longer lever blade, firmer feel, and less lever travel, which to me is a plus point over the M596 which I feel is too short, soft feeling, and has a lot of dead travel. The flip side is less effort to pull the lever, more easily accessible power, and the ability to single finger brake if that's your thing. For an extra £20 it might be worth buying the system and trying it, with the option of selling the lever in the unlikely event of you not being happy.
