[Closed] New Shifters

I have purchased an old Carrera Vengence from someone, im not interested in spending loads of money, its only to ride around Rutland water as I live very close to there.

I was part way through changing the gear cables when I rounded one of the little screws on the shifter cover, long story short, rather then mess about I am thinking of just changing the shifter.

It currently has Shimano ST-ef51-8r and I want to stay with the brake lever and shifter combo, unless someone can suggest otherwise.

Can I just change to Shimano ST-EF500-2 without any problems? I have mechanical disc brakes if that helps.

Or can someone suggest an alternative?
