New hardtail - budget £1500

Hi,

Ive been away from biking for a while and as ever, the selection of bike is huge and a bit over whelming.

I have a budget of £1500 ish and would like a hardtail for general trails and mountain bike centres.

My research was taking me towards the Whyte 629 but it is generally out of stock until December when the V5 will appear.

I have also looked at the Trek Roscoe 8 which there are some pretty good deals on just now.

Any other suggestions in this price range or comments on the Roscoe?

Thanks

Craig

Edit - beaten to it by Trusty by seconds, I've also got one but struggling to ride it due to back issues :/

All good bikes above.

Roscoe is a bit of a lump but warranty is great if that kind of thing worries you.

I'd also chuck in an Orbea Laufey with Fox forks and XT drivetrain. But still not such a great deal as the On One Vandal IMHO.

Orbea Laufey '22 £1,719 or less

Blimey, hard to ignore that On-One.

Just in case OP isn't aware, it has fancy electric shifting as well as the titanium frame and a decent enough fork.

And the geometry looks excellent for an all-rounder.

Again, this is a classic recommend what you have, but I have been down this rabbit hole recently and after reading many, many reviews I have ended up with a Merida Big Trail which I am very happy with.

That On One Vandal seems to be a ridiculously good value deal though, as long as it turns up! As others have said, use a credit card.

There's a large Stif Squatch with good spec in the classifieds for that kind of budget..

Saying that, the second hand market is dead atm so there are some huge bargains about. Today I picked up a 2022 carbon hardtail in very, very good condition for £600. RRP was over 2k.

A plug would be my Banshee Paradox custom.

Depending on what size you'll be wanting and where bouts you are I guess.

Is literally as new with GX 11SPD, Halo wheels, DVO forks, Magura brakes yadi yadi ya!

Would sell cheap too as in need to clear off rent for next two months or so ahead.

Inbox me if would like details, spec, pics etc 👍

Christ that On One Vandal is cheap! They were doing one for £1399 not long ago with mechanical GX and a Gold RL fork for £1399 which I thought was a good deal, but @ £1499 with AXS and a Pike!!! 🤯

Asked a similar question the other week (well, what frame), ended up sourcing a Merida Big Trail frame only for £200 off someone who'd bought the wrong size. Turned up yesterday, haven't got round to building it yet, but looks awesome... My problem is I've got a whole bike's worth of parts that are worth bugger all right now, cos the market has turned so much, and I don't want to give them away, so thought at least if they're on a frame I can use it... Or sell a whole bike when the market improves...

But if I was buying a bike right now! That Vandal would be top of the list... Only the wheels, tyres and grips/saddle are the weak points, but they're all very easily rectified.

Vitus sentier? Often around that price point, spec looks good value

The Vandal is a bloody bargain! It's a full GX AXS groupset bar for the chain.  Even the cassette which is usually crap.

Run that bad-boy through C2W and you'd be looking at potentially sub £1k if you're in the higher bracket.

Build your own would be my advice. Can actually work out cheaper with a bit of work.

Many thanks to @mattoutandabout for linking to my ad for the Stif Squatch above - I've just lowered the price so it's now under your target and the spec is awesome - even better than the Pro Select spec direct from Stif.....!

For reference I built this. All new parts apart from lightly used Lyrics and (50 miles old) Hunt V2s. Rest is SLX mech and shifter, GX chain, NX cassette and cranks, carbon bars, 170mm dropper, Rekon tyres.

£1,250 and a couple of hours work.

12.5kg w/o pedals
