I run Hope Hoops with Mavic XC717 rims but want to run a fatter front tyre than my current 2.1 Nevegals. I will probably be using a 2.35 Nevegal or Blue Groove. I will be using tubes too.
Is a Hope Hoop with Stan's Flow the way to go? I want it to be a bit beefier than an XC wheel but still light.
Hope/Crest? Lighter than your current wheel, arguably as strong and 4mm wider. I'd imagine a Flow would be a bit too beefy, if you've got on OK with the XC717.
2.35 Nevagal would work fine on an XC717 anyway. No need to change rims unless you want an even wider profile than it would give on your existing rim.
Cheers warpcow thats a good call. I didn't realise they were 21mm wide.
I could sell my existing front wheel then too.
I used to use 2.35 Nevegals on my 717s. The Mavic website says 717s are only for 2.1 but the sticker on the wheel says 2.3 so it's not much over. People said "That'll be horrible", "It'll squirm", etc etc, but when I switched to wider rims it just felt the same.
Though otoh, if your riding needs a big fat draggy grippy tyre, it might be wise to replace the 717 with something a bit stronger anyway. 717s are way tougher than people give them credit for (fair bit of metal in them) but they still have their limits.
