I had a set of XT 756/XM719 wheels up in the loft for about a year or so which I dragged out yesterday to put on my Scandal. The rear hub felt a bit gritty and the freehub was really stiff so I decided to service it.
When I took the ball bearings out of the freehub some of them were stuck together and on closer inspection the race (?) where they sit was scarred. I guess that over the time they were stored the grease must ahve dried out.
I need to get a new freehub is it worth getting a new 765 one or will I be better off getting say an stx or deore and saving a few quid? Alternatively would it be worth getting a new hub and keeping the rest of it as spares?
Get a new hub and feree hub, they will both be matched ad have new bearings and bearing surfaces, just repaklce the grease in them i did.
I'd go LX or SLX, Deore less well sealed, and as to hub vs freehub, whichever is cheaper (no idea).
You may well get what you have running OK again with new bearings and maybe a cone - it should wear smooth over time, but no point if the freehub internals are goosed of course.
HTH.
