Well are they? This is inspired by seeing the price of those new Maguras on the ST front page......

Seeing as a decent pair of new forks now costs as much as a mid-range bike.

I mean I have a set of 2005 Pace RC41s, serviced by myself since I got them. These are getting on for 4 1/2 years old, and they still handle all that's thrown at them. I've also just purchased some 2003 RC36 Stealths from the classifieds, and after a good strip and service I anticipate them giving a good few years bounciness 🙂

Looking over at the classifieds there always seems to be a lot of second-hand forks wanted and for sale - but does anyone really think it makes sense to spend anywhere up to £700-£800 on some new forks?

£700-800 for a set of forks is far too much IMHO.

My old Pace RC40s were blessed with magnificent damping, but the reliability was awful. If you get on with your RC41s and service them without issue then it's probably best to stick with them for a while.

I'll only replace my forks when they're worn out and not before.

Exactly my point. If they work fine, them why replace them!

Do the new forks of 2009/2010 have that much imporoved functionality over those from 4-5 years ago?

I know (from personal use) that there was quite a big jump in the technology between about 1995/6 and 2001/2, but the rate of progress does seem to have tapered off somewhat.

Hi,

I'm pretty impressed by the dual air reba teams with pushloc that on-one are selling for £250. Very smooth straight out of the box for a very low price.

Cheers

I don't tend to buy new forks but upgrade old ones. I had some 04 fox float forks, self serviced them every 6 months so in mint condition. But by 2007 the dampening was noticably worse than the new fox forks coming out. So I bought a new RLC dampener cartridge from mojo at a fraction of the price of new forks and hey presto I had the new dampening performance, I only just sold them. I recently got the new 2010 RLC FIT dampener cartride to fit to my 07 float fork chasis and its a marked improvement. I only upgrade when the technology has really advanced, £178 for new fox dampening technology rather than the new price of Float RLC's.

I bought some new 09 Fox 36 Van RC2s when I ****ed my Pikes - £450 which seems a pretty huge amount to me but nothing compared to the RRP/price at most places. Would never have considered spending over £500 on them let alone £7-800.

However, they are pretty spectacularly good - really plush and stiff. Very confidence inspiring on steep, rough stuff and drops etc.

Just over a year ago got a new bike built up, and used 08 coil Rev's, 85-130mm U turns. I love them, my first 'modern' fork. I think my lbs charged around £380?? but knocked a bit off on the deal.
Following on from the general discussion following Russ's law suit against Fox, I am really keen to go to a maxle setup and loose the qr.
So ...New Rev's air, 2010 erm....around £700?
New Pike's coil, probably nearer to what I've got ....£500ish.

Can't justify it, so will stick with what I've got and keep checking the qr!
What's happened during 2009/2010 to jack up the prices to gob smacking wallet melting amounts????
yours a bit unimpressed......
