[#2205502]

Well after my Fox 90RL stanchions died and the bill for sorting them was almost £300, I had a look at other stuff. The Foxs I had my eye on sold out so looked at RS SIDs. Just ordered them - http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=52651

Now it's time for STW to tell me I've just been daft...

Good choice.
I personally prefer RockShox to Fox any day of the week.
(although am currently riding Fox as I can't afford to upgrade:( )

Not daft at all, excellent choice, although I'd have shopped around.

SID Teams for £10 less.

For future reference, although clearly OEM forks (cut steerers, no pump etc) Merlin are stunning value for RS!

Phew - it's the sort of outlay that makes me nervous!

TBH I don't have any particular loyalty to either but the write ups on the SIDs seem good. No idea if Poploc will be any use but I guess it could be fun to use. I'll also have a remote switch for my light soon so my bars will get rather crowded!

They seem light though - not sure what my 90RLs weigh but I think it's a wee bit more.

Might ebay the forks in case anyone needs the legs and other bits and bobs.

Njee - this sounds utterly sad but I wanted black ones to match the bike! Worth a tenner to sad git me!

Fair enough, that's the Team rather than the Race (BlackBox MoCo), the Race was £40 cheaper, but still only white, so you're safe!

My Teams were 115g lighter than the 2010 Fox F100RL FITs they replaced.

I have SIDs and Fox's. The SIDs are def lighter but Fox a bit stiffer and feel like they have more limitless travel. Depends where/how you ride.

I ride fast but on technical/slippery DH sections, I ride like a total gayer.

I'm also 11.5 stone so not too heavy.

Well they've just arrived and the main thing is that:

The colour matches the rest of the bike!

Getting someone that knows to fit them (I'd muck it up) but he can't do them until next Thursday.

Look pretty nice and very light indeed. Remote lockout should be interesting - although my bars are starting to get a wee bit crowded!

Got some 2011 Fox F120's with remote and they are fantastic (over my faultless RL120's 07's) - been using them for 3 months now and noting to show on the kashima coatings and plush as you like out the box 🙂 Just to stick up for Fox's 🙂

They are great. Mine are 2 years old and haven't been touched. Not as stiff as fox but the weight is lower.

The new SIDs are awsome. I heard that it was better to get the ones with the blackbox motion control over std, so I did. I have no idea if it is any better or not - they're def MUCH better than my completely shagged RC38's 🙂

Foxy - have to admit that I did look for Fox forks but I could only get 2009s for sensible money and just as I went to order some, they sold out! So SIDs seemed a good alternative and a wee bit cheaper (a notch under £400).

TBH they should be more than good enough for me - they are the "Team" ones so not top end but not far off AFAIK.

Hopefully a bit more weight shaved off the Stumpy now.

Original parts are now just the frame, front mech (it simply WILL NOT wear out!!) stem (can't find a better "fit") and grips (they just work)!! Everything else has been upgraded.

Foxy - I literally had my finger over the order button on some F100 RLs (100mm) but decided to mull over it - then they had gone!

Some seem to prefer the SIDs - I'll wait and see but the extra 10mm of travel should come in handy.

Off for a night ride later - it's flooding down here again (only slightly) so should be a fun wet one. Flogging the Fox's for spares. Well hoping to anyway...

I wanted to wait for the new Kashima coatings (2011) as I have had a tiny (and I mean tiny) bit of upper wear on my 09' Talas' (left my service a tiny bit too long). They haven't disappointed to date 🙂 I didn't want to risk the 09' and 10' models.

Calling al to the forum. Re: BS of the week entry.

Plus its RS, so your travel could be +/- 30% quoted anyway ... 😉

Is there any reason why Surf-Mat requires a pasting every time he posts something?

Just open them up after a couple of rides and add some fork oil / lube the seal/rings. We did this with a friends recently and there was no oil to speak of in them. Obvioulsy RS trying very hard to hit weight limits.

Tony - will do when they get fitted. Oil is definitely needed.

Foxy - water off a duck's back TBH...

Finally got them fitted (my friendly bike mechanic was away!) and wow! They look and feel fantastic! Need to get them bedded in but they really are lovely and also should have shaved some more weight off the bike.

Poploc seems good too - better than I expected.

The black/silver matches the bike nicely too 😉

Had the brakes bled and sorted too so they are working nicely.

I would check now how much oil is in the lowers and top up if less than recommended or You'll wear the uppers if they are dry inside. GF's brother had a Reba that were almost dry inside. Now sorted. Not even a 5 minute job. Better to start looking after a new fork rather than spending £400 again in 2 years time (or less).

Are You selling the Fox fork Mat? I was thinking of trying to use Fox compression cartridge in a different fork. If You haven't sold Your forks yet I might be interested.

Mies - oil was fine; had it checked.

Not sold the Fox forks yet - 90RLs with about 2 months left in the stanchions but legs totally fine and cartridges still in good working order.

Dobo - I ride with the guy that fitted them a fair bit so he's set them up pretty well. Looking forward to giving them a good testing - might have to be once this flaming black ice melts a bit though!

Blimey - first really hard ride with the forks (done a few 10-12 milers and one woods session but so muddy it was hard to get any speed up) last night - only 16 miles but pretty serious terrain.

These forks are a revelation (pardon the pun)! Completely turbocharged my DH speed due to perfect damping and rocketed me up climbs with the poploc lock on. I reckon my Fox's were more knackered than I realised - I was skittering all over the place with them. The SIDs just soaked it all up. The extra 10mm isn't much but used the full travel and the front end sits ever so slightly higher and relaxes the right fractionally.

I am gobsmacked at the difference - every DH at full tilt rather than having to hang back, every climb at max power rather than skittering around.

Excellent.

I've tried various SID's (Race and Team) on my Epic and Fox F80's, 90's and 100's. I was never particularily happy with the race version of the SID's but the team ones I like a lot and that's currently what's fitted. My Zion has F90RL's on though, and I definitely prefer those to the SID Race's I've also used on it.

I prefer the SIDs to my 90RLs by a fair margin.

Teams have Blackbox trickery in them but are heavier. It's 50/50 on whether Blackbox or Motion Control (in the Races) is best but the "ultimate" seems to be to stick Blackbox into Races.

Whatever, I'm very pleased with them. What didn't you like about the Races? Me and a few mates have them and struggle to find any faults as long as the +ve and -ve pressures are correct.

Couldn't put my finger on exactly what it was, however when I switched my Zion to them (I'd been playing with F80's and F100's on it) they just didn't seem to work as well. Switching them to F90's was an immediate improvement, although adding a bit of weight. I wouldn't rule out it being a set-up issue, although I did try a few pressure settings.

I'd also used the same F80's and F100's on the Epic but when I switched to the Team's from those I thought the SID's were great. I actually bought the F90's to go on the Epic but haven't tried them on it yet because the Teams just seem to work so well.

The Race's are currently languishing up the back of the garage and I've no doubt will be dragged out again next year when I decide to put together a 21/22lb hardtail again.

Steve - interesting to hear. Mine are on a Stumpy HT and seem to work really well. Only got the 90RLs to compare them to but TBH the stanchions are shot so they were probably more knackered than they should have been before replacement.

Can convert Races to Teams by changing the damper catridge (more or less) but at the moment, I'm very happy with them. Slim design also much easier to clean!
