I am in the market for a Zeb ultimate for my Commencal Meta Sx. The factory bikes have a 170mm fork on them and I've seen zebs on offer in either 160 or 190mm lengths.

If given the option would you go for the longer or shorter?

I could change length in future but already pushing budget so I'll make do for now.

Whichever’s cheapest, then change the air shaft to 170mm?

Both are same price. I will change travel in future but I'm being tight and lazy in meantime.

It's a buttercup version so the airshafts are like 90 quid.

Some frames have a design specification for fork length. Go outside it and void your warranty.

I'd go 160mm.

20% sag puts you at 136mm on a 170mm fork, run 15% on the 160's and you end up at the same place.

You can get just the part you need for the travel change without the Buttercups *

I would personally go shorter.

* Assuming they're in stock in the UK

OK cheers guys. 160mm seems the sensible choice and I'll look at the travel change bit further down the line.
