I'm not in touch with the disc equipped crosser world so what are the wheels and mechanical discs of choice?
It's going to be a mid priced build and the emphasis is on durability and robustness rather than super light weight.

Avid BB7s (road) have long been the 'go to' model of choice. As 'road' disks are catching on the competition might be upping their game now though. E.g. Genesis Croix de Fer (which is in your 'durable' category) now comes with Hayes disks instead of the BB7s.
I bought Rigida Chrina rims for my build, but only because the CTC forum slated budget Mavic offerings. Can't say my research was extensive.

Mates who race competitively continue to use cantis, only semi pros who get given gear are on discs..
Anyone tried the TRP Spyre yet? Look pretty good.

No but I want them. Makes a lot of sense for kind the riding I do and will hopefully mean that wheels last longer than about 6 months.
What the pros or semi-pros do isn't really relevant to my riding.

I'm in the same boat, just waiting for my 2014 frame of choice to land! Still thinking about kit though, I want hydraulic discs but torn between SRAM or a Hope V-Twin system - the advantage of the V-Twin being that I can still use "chicken levers" which I view as essential for the Three Peaks (and which true CX racers look at in horror!)

You can get 6 bolt adapters but it is a pain.

I couldn't get the BB7 right TBH in the grit I went through pads like butter. I've now got the hope discs and adapter and they are brilliant. Im using campag leavers and Id not go back TBH.

I know that but it doesn't make Centrelock any less sh!ta design and it would be a waste to buy one and chuck it.

you wouldn't be, the CX-75 is sold as a caliper only, then you'd just purchase your rotor of choice as normal, including the four or five different Shimano 6-bolt options!
My point is just that Centrelock is crap.
If all bike disks sold to date had been Centrelock, how would you go about promoting the advantages of 6 bolt?

I'm a fan of systems that don't require specialist tooling to fit and remove.
I also dislike the fact that on Shimano cup and cone hubs I need to take the disc off to adjust the hub.
Gone off at a bit of a tangent here.
Back on topic, has anyone got wheel suggestions?
I've just got a pair of Stan's Iron Cross rims on XT hubs (with the dreaded centre lock option!) from Just Riding Along. Nice wheels, will be using them for the 3 Peaks. A little bit spendy at about £320 including new discs, but Hope hubs came in at £400+.
shimano centerlock hubs are lighter than shimano 6 bolt if i recall so not so shit
but i guess you could counter that with lightweight 6 bolt rotors.
centerlock rotors are heavier but have you ever warped or even heard of a warped centerlock rotor, not me.
Using Avid BB7 MTB with Long pull Drop bar levers and they work spiffingly well and on the plus side if I change to flat bars I only need to change the levers(Its a singlespeed).
Regards wheels I built some Halo Aerotrack rims on to a combination of Goldtec and Hope hubs ,all seems to be pretty rigid and spins well.
Regards Centrelock I have them on my MTB never had a issue with them and there far quicker to fit/take off than regular discs,dont know what the dislike is for them.
Centre lock rocks!! and no "specialist tools" required, just the same one that you use on your cassette, and when it only takes <30secs to remove a disc who cares if you have to to service the hub?

For me, the dislike is simply that it's one more "standard" in a world of millions of different standards and it's bloody annoying when it comes to buying/selling secondhand gear.
I've used both centrelock and 6-bolt rotors/hubs in the past, they both work fine, neither is better than the other IMHO. Re taking disc off - not sure I've ever done that once they're fitted other than to fit a new one so the argument of "it's easier to take off" isn't really worth considering cos you do it once every couple of years!
Wheels: I've always used Mavic rims on my existing CX bike, they've lasted really well. Will probably go for Hope Hoops on my new bike though.
