In the market for a new front ring. What's the consensus on oval rings?

I've currently got a 28t on there. Was thinking of moving back up to 30t, but I've just seen that oval narrow/wide rings are a thing, but it looks like I might have to get a 32t if I want to give that a go. I'm not sure if I can use a spider less ring. I've got race Face aeffect cranks with a hope gxp BB. I'll see if the spider is removable later.

Does the"increased efficiency" of the oval balance the increase in size!?

They just feel different. Wife uses a hope 32 but will go to a 34 as spin out.

Gearing difference isn't different so if you ride a 30 standard a 30 oval is the same. Just feels like you drop quicker on the down stroke.

You can get cinch oval rings from the likes of AbsoluteBlack and WorksComponents.

I used an oval ring last week for the first time while spending a week in Scotland riding the 7Stanes. At first I could not feel anything, but then I realised that on steep grinding climbs, I was not wheel slipping or struggling to put the power down evenly. The oval rings does it for you. Just riding along normally etc, I don't think it is doing anything noticeable, but it definitely makes it feel like you are pedalling more evenly on the climbs, moreso the slower and steeper - in my opinion.

I am converted and have just ordered a WorksComponents cinch ring for my hardtail. I am replacing 32t round with 32t oval.

Probably not explained it well enough to avoid contradiction or such like, but I know what I mean at least ๐Ÿ˜‰

The AEffect cranks are direct mount so you can go down to 26T with AB oval rings, not sure about the other manufacturers. 30T oval is the smallest you can go on 104BCD spiders.

I've an AB 28T oval on RF AEffect cranks on my fat bike, it's why I got the cranks.

I personally think oval rings work best the steeper your climbs.

I am sold on ovals. Definitely smooths out the ooomph on climbs. Had absolute black and now on superstar raptor. The amount of 'ovalling' appears to be the same.
