[Closed] New cassette with a range expander?

My friend is looking at going 1x10 on his bike, and he wants an expander on his cassette. He'll also be replacing the chain, front ring (3-1 so obviously) and possibly the rear mech, yet insists he doesn't need to replace the cassette, which I can testify is visibly worn even if it is not yet affecting performance. So, could the collective might of stw explain to him why he needs a new cassette to make it work nicely?

new chain = new cassette, if it's worn.

Look at the Sunrace 11-40 or 11-42. About the same price as an equivalent standard cassette+expander but better integration and gear spread.

Go sunrace, if his cassette is worn it'll be a shifting nightmare

Won't a worn cassette wear out a new chain in short order cos its bedded in to fit an old stretched chain and will misalign with a non-stretched one? Or am I misremembering?
