Morning All

I need a new casstte for my pro 2 rear hub and I seem to recall something about having to have an alloy spider to stop it maiming the freehub?

I'm running 2x9 with an 11-32 casstte and I usually go with Sram as I find they last longer IME. Not adverse to changing this though an dhear lots of good stuff for SLX kit.

evening dude

yes, if you have the standard alloy 'soft as cheese' freehub body you will want as many of the rings on an alloy carrier as possible. At least xt, that leaves 3 rings loose. I think SLX has more loose ones. If you go for SRAM you want the 991.

when you have chewed the freehub body up in a few years you can replace with a stainless steel one and go back to running cheap cassettes

Well a quick reveals the SLX and 980 both support 3 and the XT/990 carry 6. I currently have a 990 which has lasted ages however its £15 more on CRC so may give the XT a spin this time around.

EDIT: Merlin is cheaper for both XT £46 and 990 £47 😀

Any cassette will chew up the Hope Pro II. I used XT from new and it was damaged. I've now switched to a SLX and the damage doesn't seem to be any worse. I spoke to Hope about it and they weren't surprised and said I could change the body for a steel one.

It's pretty easy to remove once you have the knack. Here's how I do it: Removing a stuck cassette from a Hope Pro II hub.

The steel freebies weigh a ton too, may as well save money and just buy an XT hub if you're gonna do that.

It's largely cosmetic damage, people get too stressed about it!
