The Tektro brakes on my Dark Side bike are crap. I have no confidence in them stopping me in an emergency, even after adjusting, again.

Anyone got any experience of TRP HYRD and Hope V-Twin?

I'd prefer the TRP's from an ease of fitting and price POV but I'm worried about reports of long lever throw, which is one of the things I hate about the Tektro's.

Cheers

What sort of Tektro's are they; Spyres? Assuming newish, you'll really need to bed the pads in as you may have near zero braking until you do. I've Spyres on two bikes and once bedded in, they're ace. I put it in bottom gear and then pedal against a partially applied brake for a bit until it starts to grab properly.

What levers are you using?

TRP Hy:RD work really well with 5700/6700 levers IMO and Hope V twin's are terrible with these levers. The 5700/6700 pull a little more cable in a complete lever stroke than older or more recent Shimano lever, so you get a reduce leverage. Hy Rd have a longer pull to actuation of the brake, so work well with 5700/6700.

Hope V twin don't work so well with 5700/6700 as they seem to have very little cable pull before the pads contact the disc but do work quite well with 5600/6600 and I guess more recent models too.

EDIT - also, HyRd's are a doddle to set up. The fitting video on YouTube is well worth a watch. Hope V twin much more of a faff, mainly becuase you need to get the outer cable just right in length (pretty much mm perfect) to get the right entry angle to prevent rubbing into the master cylinder cable end stops and you're dealing with tiny hex grub screws to clamp the cables.

Bleeding Hy Rd's is also a doddle with the Epic Bleed Solutions kit for Tektro brakes.

I have hope v twin. Looks ugly but works a treat. Simple enough for even me to strip and rebuild (once in 4.5 years).
Set on sale in the classifieds i think...

Hi All

Thanks for the replies.

Levers are Tiagra 4600's. Any idea if they would work well with the HYRD's?

I'll take a peek at the classifieds.

Edit: Classified v-twin's are a bit spendy consider what you can get a new set for online.

There's been a few sets on the Classifieds recently... £125 is about the right sort of money for some excellent condition v twins IMO.

I've not tried the HyRd's with 4600, which being external gear cable design I imagine will be similar brake pull to 5600 levers, but it's just a guess. They'll work and self adjust etc... fine, but it depends if you like your brake lever to pull cable such that the pads hit the disc early in the stroke or later in the stroke - they HyRds with 4600 will be later in the stroke I believe.

Yeah seen those. Am I right in thinking they don't self adjust though?

Actually, that's a good call. Juin Tech / Acor are brilliant brakes which work very well with 5600 cable pull, so should work a treat with 4600.

They don't self adjust, but the adjuster knob which compensates for pad wear is a doddle to use. Unlike BB7/BB5 which seize in time.

I'm upgrading my Juin Tech R1 this week to Shimano hydro.
Will still the Juin in the classifieds by Friday.
I had them for 18 months. The front is brilliant but my frame is full length outer and the back brake could do with good quality outers and need regular clean and maintenance.

Not really sure, you set up initial clearances which is a doddle don't recall adjusting them for pad wear, there on my spare bike nowadays. If any adjustment is required it is very easy you just turn a little adjuster by hand
